I was hoping for some input trying to fix problem. I have a JD 4310 E power reverser that has about 1100 hrs and I can't get it to go into 4 wheel drive. The switch lights up but I hear no clicks or pops when engaging. It tries to work but when the rear wheels spin all you hear is gears grinding from not being fully engaged. No grinding in 2 wheel drive when switch is off. That alone tells me that the switch is sending 12v to the relay. If by a very fluke chance it will engage as soon as I change directions it will pop out and start grinding gears again.
I changed hydro fluid but that didn't make any difference. This happens in all gears and all speeds, forward or reverse. It was my understanding that the relay was to hold the gears out of 4wheel drive but the way this is acting is the relay won't engage the gears properly. I do have the repair manual on CD but this might be more than I want to tackle right now. If it's something I can do without pulling gears I will try at home.

I'm open to any ideas you can give me.
Thanks,
John

The manual should have a diagnoses procedure. Some steps you can take to narrow down the problem. I somehow doubt a gear grinding condition can be fixed without getting to the gears themselves but I don't know nuthin about the electronics of the 4x10 series.

As a simple test.... have you check the front axle oil level? If its dry it will grind (and worse).

the gear noise could be the splined shaft not engaging properly

how are you driving the tractor when you engage and disengage the 4x4?

Where is the noise coming from? Trans or axle

I have found that moving very slowly when engaging or disengaging and having the front wheels as straight as possible works best

Thanks for the guidence and sorry that I haven't replied earlier been busy mowing and can't get any time to work on the problem.
I have tried on various occasions to get it back into 4x4 mode with no success. I have tried engaging in all ranges and at different speeds and rpm's. Tried from standing still to popping clutch and both forward and reverse with no luck. The grinding gears are what Chickenman said that is the splined shaft not engaging properly. The only time you hear the grinding is when you try to put it in 4x4 and the rear tires spin. When it's in 2 wheel drive the tractor works perfectly.
I guess the bad problem is that I can't put the tractor out of service until late October when the mowing jobs slow up. I will keep everyone up on what the problem and fix is when I find out. Thanks again for your help and if anybody can think of anything else let me know!

I just finished looking at the manual and I have found some things to check over the next few days. If I'm lucky it's the little cylinder that keeps the splined shaft engaged on the side of the tranny.

This happened to me. My 4 by 4 would not disingauge so I kept running it and it striped the little drive shaft that goes to the front end. I replace that but I come to this web site to try and get some information on the wire harness to fix the wireing problem but have not had any success. The man who had it before me run over some brush and all I have is 4 black wires coming out of the solenoid a I need help
