5085M stuck in park, but was forced to drive it anyway

Ive never been in a tractor with this feature. Always one with push brake, pull lever to lock brake pedal. I hate when they try to improve easy.

I've driven many types and had the following on the place:

1) Driveline brake separate from foot brakes
2) Small finger latch on brake pedals that locks foot brakes on
3) Large ratcheting hand lever with linkage that locks foot brakes on
4) Park position on transmission separate from foot brakes

#4 is the only one you can't drive the tractor with the parking brake on.

The rest only take forgetting to release the brakes to pull away with the brake set. Makes it fun jumping between models and having to mentally double check the brake is off.

I have one tractor with park and it says not to park on on a slope. I assume for this reason. Sort of a pain, most tractors you set the brake and you are good.

Hope you get it fixed, sounds like a lot of work.
That sounds crazy, if you're not on a slope you don't need park/brake set.

Yeah, my Ford 1700 has the gold old brake pedal with a finger latch. Have to occasionally adjust to make sure the left and right side are about even when braking. Very easy to maintain.

My John Deere 1025R has this slide lever you engage with your good on the brake.

I don't mind either of those systems, but this 5 series tractor with this park position on the transmission is proving to be a very expensive one when it doesn't work. Dropped it off this morning and he said it would be a few weeks before they would get to it. But he was pretty sure the cap would have to come off...

And you are pretty confident it's not just an external linkage issue of some sort? "cause it sure seems like that might be all it is.

Is it linkage or electrical? I think the newer power shifts are all electric but not sure if quad range.

I think all of the larger Deere 8000 & 9000 series models just have park with no brake lock. Nothing sure on the smaller ones but I know our old 1968 2510 Deere just had park with no brake lock.

Is the gearbox some version of "quad " box?

Tractor is a 2012 5085M with PowrReverser Transmission. 16 forward and reverse gears (4 ranges with 4 gears in each). It's NOT the PowrQuad PLUS or Powr8 transmission and it doesn't have the creeper option.

The range selector (A-D and Park) is a long shaft with a cradle at the bottom with a ball joint:

About half way up the long rod, is the item circled above. This connects directly to a shaft going into the transmission shift rod. There are no external adjustments at all. When I attempt to push the range selector away from the seat towards the park position, the shaft going into the transmission won't allow it to come towards the park position. There's nothing external that is preventing it from moving in that direction.

Never had a single issue with the transmission in my 12 years of ownership. So it went from working 100% to not working at all after putting it in park on a step hill with a trailer attached.

Suspect the load on the park pin kept it from disengaging fully when you parked on that hill. Used to have same problem with our 2510. We learned to do everything you could to not put it in park under much of a load. Had to use another tractor to pull in slightly once to get it to come out of park.

Surprised you got it to shift into gear.

Hopefully nothing to major damaged and a lesson learned.

5 series tractors have had this type of transmission on the sync shuttle and PR I know since 2000. Sounds like something broke in yours and I can't imagine not doing additional damage if you drove it very far stuck in park.

Sounds like the "park" pawl is stuck partway & grinding gears as you move. A simple adjustment may be all that is necessary, But you will want to do an inspection of the gears/pawl for tooth damage/wear before putting it back together. Hopefully, they were smart enough to make the pawl of softer metal so it took the damage instead of your gears. Also probably need to change the tranny fluid/filter at a minimum. worst case, you're looking at a rebuild.
