My 4310 is three years old now. Last Saturday I was moving some stuff around to the back of the house in the FEL and all was well. Started just fine a couple of times, no problem. I went to start it to move it and ....click...click click. I didn't leave any lights on etc. I got the battery charger out and removed the battery and put a charge on it. It's showing 12 volts and doesn't seem to want to turn over. When I turn the lights on, they do pulsate a bit. Do you think I need to buy a new battery even though I am showing 12 volts?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Check the battery voltage with your lights on. Sometimes a battery will show 12 volts with no load on it, but as soon as it is underload it drops out.

HeyNow,

The battery on my 4310 failed in a similar way after 2 years of use. It seemed that all of a sudden and without warning it would not start the tractor. Just click. When I turned on the roll bar mounted lights, the lights would come on dim. I left them on and I could here the battery hiss. After a few seconds the lights got bright but the tractor still would not start. The battery could not handle the load. It probably had shorted plates inside. A good, fully charged battery will read higher than 12 volts.

Because mine was only 2 years old it was prorated against a replacement JD battery.

I think it is time for a new battery. If in doubt, take it to an auto parts store and have the battery tested.

You got 1 year more out of your John Deere battery than I did mine. Mine failed almost 2 yrs to the day.

A good battery should show about 13+ volts.

Lots of auto parts stores will test it for you.

Or buy a load tester for yourself, they're not that pricey.

I took the battery to our local Battery Mart and they did a load test. The results were not good. So, I bought one of their 60 month brands and dropped 'er in and she fired right up. The only problem has been to find a battery hold down since the new battery does not work with the stock hold downs.

Thanks everyone for your insight.

my 4310 battery lasted about 2 years replacment was another jd battery so the original hold down is still being used i did not want an aftermarket battery flopping around up front i have seen the damage caused by batterys from not being properly secured.
