I have a 4310 with FEL and 72 inch MMM a year old. I went to raise the deck a few weeks ago, and instead of the deck coming up, the transmission case cracked. The wheels on the mower deck never came off of the ground. A hydraulic sensor also broke as a result and the service man said there is a bent bracket, although I am not quite sure where this bracket is located. The dealer is saying the deck may have been out of adjustment, but I can't imagine that would break the case on it?!?!?! Has anyone heard of this happening before or is it a fluke?

Needless to say, it was a mess with all the hydraulic fluid that poured out. It made me sick when it first happened but I am hoping to get the tractor back in the next week or so. The work is piling up!

OUCH!! That hurts just hearing about it.

Just curious... have you ever used a 3 Pt hitch Backhoe on that tractor?

Never had a backhoe on it. The only 3 point attachments I have used are a brush hog and 6 foot blade to clear snow on my drive.

I have heard of one other event of this nature. What happened in that case is that the pin holding the rod end of the lift cylinder fell out for some reason. Then when the operator tried to lift the mower deck the cylinder extended until it hit something solid. At that time the bracket holding the cylinder end bent back and one end (I don't remember which) of the cylinder was pushed into the transmission case causing it to break. Your bad experience seems very similar.

Sorry to hear about your experience.

"I am hoping to get the tractor back in the next week or so. The work is piling up!"

You better start making some alternative plans, my guess is that it's going to be awhile.

I had the dealer install a MMM on my 4100 and noticed oil leaking but thought it was some leakage on the gearbox. Turned out to be a hydraulic line coming off the HST trans was bent 90 degrees. This particular line had a banjo fitting on the end of it. The dealer replaced the line at his expense but I immediately traded in the MMM for a rear finish mower which I like alot better. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Ditto on ease of working on the tractor. At first I added just about 6.8 gallons and I was able to get the correct level in the sight glass. I than ran the tractor for a few minutes and then let it set for 10-15. At that point the level was low. Today a purchased one more gallon of low viscosity hydro. I havent been out yet to add any but I would be supprised if it took much more than what may be needed to fill the filters. I dont know much oil if any would drain from the FEL via the control valve etc when draining the system. Does any one know if this can happen and if so would there then be a chance of getting air in the system and causeing a false reading in the sight glass for a period of time?

No word on my tractor this week. The dealer is a little over an hour away so I haven't been up to see the dealer directly, but I have been in contact with the service rep over the phone. They did not say any pins were found to be missing and I didn't notice any missing when it broke, although I did not spend much time checking it out because I knew I couldn't fix it. I don't feel that I have been rough on the tractor. I use the loader, but the only wieght I have on the back end is the 6 foot blade. So I make sure not to get too much wieght on the loader to keep the tractor strable.

Since this is my first tractor... Will it be okay once they put it together again or could this become a recurring problem? And since the tractor is split, will it cause leaks or a weak point when it is put back together? Finally, what types of things should I be sure to check to make sure everything works okay when I get it back?

Thanks for the advice.

It should be just fine, assuming the mechanic does the job right and he probably will.

I am sorry this happened to your tractor.........I agree with "gkk2001"
on the rear mower thing.....I have had too many headaches with MMM(s)
to own one again......I have been converted to the wonders of rear-mount
mowers......they are far easier to work on and get access to ....
Just be careful when mowing around decks /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Good luck on getting your tractor fixed !

Just be careful when mowing around decks

And trees and fences and cars and landscaping and gardens and buildings and.........

Just to give the other side of the story for those readers who make choices based on the information posted here, I've had a MMM for 15 years with absolutely no headaches. It tracks right where the front tires are going. All my mowing is done looking forward (except when I'm backing up). /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

....that is very true.....I have 2.1 wide-open acres with some nasty bushes
in a couple of spots that I like to back the rear-mount into to cut the grass under them and I do not ended up bleeding from limb lashing /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I am curious, did the transmission break underneath the tractor? I once had a rockshaft housing explode!! Same thing, hydraulic fluid all over me, everything!! I inspected it closely and could not belive it was made of lightwieght cast material. A friend, who works for another JD dealer said it was due to improper assembly of the rockshaft valve and improper adjustment. In a round about way, my local dealer made me feel it was my fault, although they just installed a new rockshaft valve. It was repaired "no charge" but it made for some really heavy duty stress. I am sorry, but my belief is that these machines are designed in such a way, they cannot tolerate any, "ANY" error at all. And I feel this is shameful, its difficult to go out and do any sizeable job without making at least some degree of error, actually, on a massey or other equivelent machine, it would not even be considered an error. Its only considered an error when you surpass the machines TOLERENCE, and on this particular model, that is not much "TOLERENCE". I am not trying to worry or scare you, but be extremely careful, and I would defenitely opt for the extended warranty as soon as possible, as the longer you wait, the more expensive it gets. gott

I have to admit that I am not very mechanically inclined. I do very little work on my own vehicles (starters, alternators and brakes are about it). So, I am baffled as to the cause of this. I don't think the transmission broke if you are talking about the guts of the thing. But I also didn't spend a lot of time checking the tractor out. I knew it was something that I could fix and I figured the less I touch it the better. I was also pretty much devastated and trying to figure out how I was going to get all the hydraulic fluid off of my new drive and new garage floor. What a mess! Although the 160 pounds of oil dry did a pretty good job. I do have a stain on the drive but I am hoping it fades over time.

I did speak to the service man at the dealer I used. He said they did not find any missing pins, but will put the deck back on to make sure everything works okay before I get the tractor back. It may be my lack of mechanical knowledge, but I am amazed that the case broke unless there was a defect in the casting, even if my deck was out of adjustment, which seems to be the theory. I would have thought that there would be some sort of bypass or limit on the hydraulics or you could be breaking things all the time. As I said, I am no mechanic and this is my first tractor, so I could be way off base. My biggest concern is that this doesn't happen again.

Overall, I love the tractor and am less pleased with the dealer because of other experiences I have had since I bought the tractor. I took a month longer than I was told to have the tractor delivered when I purchased it because they had to wait on a loader, then had the wrong brackets for the mower. I was told they would show me how to take the loader on and off, work the mower etc... on delivery but the delivery man had no clue how to operate the tractor and couldn't show me anything. The mid PTO did not when I first got the tractor because a wire was unplugged. It was clear to me that they had not gone over the tractor before they delivered. When I had the 50 hour service done, I had to take it back to the dealer a second time to have the transmission fluid changed because the service man didn't realize it was a hydro. He also had to replace an O-ring under the seat and fix the tilt steering wheel on the 2nd visit, which I don't consider to be the fault of the dealer or JD, but just a defect or faulty part, which can happen with anything. I also referred a co-worker to them for a 300 series mower, right after I bought mine and they did not have a good experience. Individually, none of these things would bother me, but collectively, I have been irritated at times. I might use this dealer again in the future because I think some of the problems I have experienced are just flukes and once I get the tractor back, I will be reminded of how much I like it and why I chose the 4310 over other makes that I looked at.
