My 4310 has only 40 hrs on it. This tractor has a 430 loader. I normally lower the bucket when I shut the tractor engine off. When I shut it down without lowering the bucket, it drops at a rate of about 8" per hour. JD changed the valve on it and if anything it is slightly worse. Now they tell me that this rate of drop fits well within the specs on this tractor. Does this seem normal for a new tractor? My neighbor is a farmer by profession with several larger JDs. He is pretty adamant that my tractor should not be behaving like this. He also has an older Kabota that is slightly smaller than my 4310 and the bucket on it will stay up with almost no bleed off. Am I making a mountain out of a molehill or should I be concerned. Any remarks will be greatly appreciated.

My 4010 (~300 hrs) with the 410 Loader leaks down about the same rate...and has since it was new. I was told by the dealership that it was normal. FWIW, I have not had any problems associated with it.
For safety reasons it shouldn't be left elevated while unattended.

Looks like you are on the bubble regarding the specs for leak down. I would challenge the dealer.

Dave_MT,

You got my attention so I did a test on my 4310 with 430 FEL. Tractor has 80 hours with moderate loader use plus the DSCV gets used with the front mounted snowblower.

I raised the loader to the half-extended position with the bucket empty per the procedure shoppintractors posted.

Half-extended was at a point where the rod was extended 8.75 inches. After 1 hour the rod extension measured 8.5 inches. That's only 1/4 inch drop in 1 hour.

The posted JD spec allows for 4.6"/hour. You say you are seeing 8"/hour and the dealer thinks that's within specs????

I think this is a good project for the 4310 Club. If a few of the members would measure their 430 loader drop and send in the results, Dave_MT would have some better data to go back to the dealer with. I would even suggest that you have the dealer run the test on one or two of the 4310's he has on the lot.

Good Luck.

Jeff:
Many thanks. Whereas the specs deal with measuring at the piston, my measurments are actual drop of the bucket. The measurment specified for the piston equates to more than my 8" at the bucket. I have tried it with the bucket removed and I still get a significant drop. I guess my drop at the piston is within specs, but I think the specs stink. A lot of times I am working over my garden fence and loading the bucket with whatever and I have to be careful to get my work done before the arms drop onto the fence. I'm suspicious that JD found that they had a problem and set their specs to match the problem.

Dave_MT,

It still seems excessive to me. Have you measured it at the piston rod? I let my 4310 sit over night with the bucket raised in the test position. Total drop in 9 hours = 1.5".

I still would like to hear about the experience of other 4310 owners. I would expect the leak down rate you are getting to be more like what would be seen in a worn hydraulic system. Will it get worse over a few years? Why should a properly manufactured system leak down that much?

I may be a little confused here, but when the bucket is over the fence, is the tractor running or not. I would say that if the tractor is running and the bucket drops eight inches in an hour, that is excessive.

I find that my 4310 and 430 loader with 630 hours on the clock will drop about one inch at the bucket in a hour. I notice this because it is exactly a 65 minutes drive to my friends house and I can notice the drop in relation to the grill protector.

I would never shut the tractor off unless the loader were flat on the ground. That way, you and your fence should be safe.

I have a 2210 and asked a similar question recently about the loader and the 3 pt hitch. Both seem to leak down more than I think they ought to. I can stand there and watch either of them drop right before my eyes. I have close to 100 hr on the tractor/loader.

If the loader cylinders are leaking internally, or the DSCV is leaking internally, having the tractor running or not will NOT make a difference in the rate of drop. When the DSCV is in the neutral position, the fluid just goes right through, it has no way of keeping the loader from leaking down on its own.

Is that 65 minutes driving the tractor, or are you trailering it?
