John Deere 4320
I just traded in my JD 790 on a JD 4320. It was delivered on friday and ran fine for about 2 hours and then it started bellowing out lots of blue smoke from the exahust. So bad at 1 point I thought the engine was going to burn up( You couldn't see a foot in front of the tractor)It also does it on cold startup. I took it to the dealer today and they said except for a 5000 series , They have never had this problem with a 4X20 series tractor . When it happens the tractor will not even move up a small grade without stalling. It seems to happen everyday and up to 1/2 hour at a time and sometimes as little as 5 minutes. when its running well it seems ok. The dealer was going to contact JD and get back to me. Has anyone else heard of any problems like this?

Thank you
Jim

It sounds like some water in the fuel. Mine did that once, it smoked terrific and had no power. I shut it down and drained the water out (check manual for procedure), then it ran perfect again. I had about 120 hours on mine, though, not 2. If you haven't checked that, it's worth a try.

Blue smoke is oil burning. I would have the dealer investigate this thoroughly, as it is not normal. A little blue smoke is normal on a well worn engine at start up and hard acceleration.

This is a brand new tractor? Insist on a full report on compression and cylinder leak down test (if they do that in diesels). If it is a new machine and there is an oil consumption problem, I would refuse delivery and insist on a different machine. You would almost certainly regret accepting a major engine lubrication system problem in a new machine. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I am going to go out on a limb here and agree with Bigpete on asking for a new unit . No way in H E Double tooth picks would I want that tractor back . As one posted correctly said " Blue smoke is caused by Oil consumption from the engine" . My question is how much damage was done ? Who knows ! Has it affected the long term operation of the tractor ? Who knows! It will more than likely show up after warranty expires if your luck is the same as mine . Good Luck and for all of us here ,let us know what the cause is when you find out .

Per michiglenn, first I'd check for water or slime in the fuel system. That caused bluish white smoke from my 4610 and engine stalling. If the fuel is OK, then you have a different/bigger/more expensive problem. Good luck.

Emptied the fuel filter , No water found .filled tank with known good fuel.and still Lots of whitish blue smoke when it is a cold start With a ruff running engine and after its been running an hour or so. Its going back to the dealership on tuesday. Deere says they want to run some tests on it before getting too involved.

Thank you for your help

Coloration analysis of smoke is a subjective thing. Blue smoke and white smoke can be confused etc. Poor combustion of diesel wioll make bluish smoke just like most any farm tractor or semi that you see under light load. Until they make enough temp to run clean they will smoke a bit blue.

This case sounds severe like a timing or injector issue.

I talked to the dealer today and after having the tractor for 2 days they think it is the injectors. I should know more tomarrow.

Thanks for the help.

Well the 4320 goes on the dyno Monday. JD thinks the problem is related to the fuel pressure and wants the dealer to run a test that lasts several hours.I'll keep you posted.

Thank you
