JD 870
Hi,

I recently came into possession of a JD 870 with a 440 FEL. I'd like to replace all 8 of the FEL hydraulic hoses as they have seen better days.

My question is what type of fitting is used on these hoses? Looks like they may be ORB or ORFS but perhaps they could be a metric version as well.

Thank you for any advice.

Welcome to TBN
The information you desire is readily available on most parts on JD parts website by putting part # in ones shopping cart then left click on each part number to reveal part specifications similar to photo below.. There are many different hose configurations on a JD 440 frt end loader. I've been operating very successfully my farm equipment in a custom farming operation for 31 yrs under a different theory than yours which is "fix as fail IE if it ain't broke don't fix it".

It would be easier and probably cheaper to get a HYD shop make the hoses for you. Some parts stores like NAPA make HYD hoses also.
Just take it to them and they can match the ends and length.

I agree with above. If it isn't broken don't fix it. Cracks in the outside rubber doesn't mean the steel braded inside is compromised too. Just saying.

Agree that looks bad may not always be bad when it comes to hoses...
But it's nice to have a spare hose on hand...replace the worst hose and keep it as a spare and replace the others when/if they fail.

JD generally uses ORFS at the hardlines and cylinders, and ORB/SAE at the QD fittings. They are not metric, most will probably be -06.

Generally the "go till it blows" is a good practice -

IF
You will be in an area you can work on the tractor all the time
A leak will not be critical and damage personnel
A leak will not damage the equipment if caught soon
You can reliably get parts anytime
Replacement is easy
and probably many other factors.

I've had several hoses that started leaking and not all were the worst looking ones on the tractors. But my tractors are "hobby" type and I try to check fluid levels before use. The leaks have all been "pinhole" type leaks and resulted in minimal loss of fluid. I probably lose more fluid AFTER the repair due to spillage filling the reservoir. And all the hoses were easy to get to at both ends.

For example if you have to tear down the equipment to get to hidden hydraulic lines it's probably best to replace them while your there.

I was told in my youth curiosity killed the cat so I'm wondering if you read the spec's in the photo I posted with correct size & type of hyd fitting plus correct ID & length of hose for that 1 particular hose for your FEL?
Thanks,Jim

Try discounthydraulichose. I replaced all twelve hoses with ( R16-06 | 3/8" SAE 100R16 Hydraulic Hose ) for $360.00. 1) from tractor to loader: 06U-S68 3/8" X 57" 06U-P08 3/4"X16 4 ea. 2) 06U-S68 3/8" X 17" 06U-R68 2 ea. 3) 06U-S68 3/8" X 31" 06U-P08 2 ea. 4) 06U-S68 3/8" X 21" 06U-P08 2 ea 5) 06U-S68 3/8" X 21" 06U-R68 2 ea.
