4400HST -- how to install fuel filler door on new hood??

Hmmm....this may be the only reasonable choice. I can hardly wait to
see the new hood....

My 4300, BTW, is one of 4 or 5 units that had defective flex plates, which
were replaced by JD. That's the plate betw the HST and the engine. I
had not heard that there were units that came new with oil debris
problems.

The aluminum millings were found in some of the very first 4400's off the assembly line, so it was a relatively rare event. (my luck)

I will be interested to hear how your replacement hood fits -- got mine on after spending hours attempting to do a neat job of relieving a 4 inch by 3/4 inch area of the plastic that protrudes down toward the rear of the fuel filler opening in the replacement hood.

Well, I got my new hood the other day (shipped from PA), and
I can't say that I see the differences between it an the new
one I bought nearly 2 y ago.

I compared to pix of the other new hood I bought, some of which I posted
in my 4300 rebuild thread.

Here are a couple that I just took showing the new hood, and the
fuel door is a never-mounted older unit. I will be making a hinge
and using a single spring like last time.

I have a pic for you. The spring on the right is the deere spring. Do not know if this helps much. I was supprised that the spring does not have the shaft go through the spring. I had to copy to get it on and added the spring on the left myself.

Hello, Once I looked at the pictures I then knew how it should look once installed. To install the lid onto the hood do this. Turn hood upside down and position filler door in approximate location. Attach the small end of the spring to the hood itself in the molded loop of the hood. Then to get the other end inserted into the cap, it was much easier to use a pair of vise-grip needle nose pliers. Lock the pliers onto the other end of the spring near the coil and while holing the cap in place from underneath, hook the long end of the spring into the cap. You may have to get it held temporarily by getting the spring end in the cap half way. Then get another bite on the spring with the vise grips and insert it completely through both notches in the cap.
