Going to look at a 4410 this saturday. Whats $13,800 for it. I has 4WD, hydrostatic drive, load match and cruise. 954 hours. Says he works for a rental company that is located on the NC coast and that he used it for a year around his house to do some things but doesn't need it for anything anymore. Anything particular you would look at being a rental unit or around salt air a lot? Beside making sure everything works is there any other particular items you should check on a tractor like this before buying?

Thanks,
John

Not really...there was a problem with the instrument panels fogging (fixed on a service bulletin). I have read (but don't know personally) that some rental tractors had range C (high range) blocked off. You might want to check on this or ask the seller.
Otherwise, these are pretty strong tractors with 35 Engine HP and 28 PTO HP (HST models). It should pull strongly. The 430 loader should easily lift the front end.
There have been a few threads on 4400 and 4410 tractors recently, so do a search for more info. Also, search for 4310 since more of them are around and they are identical to the 4410 except for the engine.

BTW, I see that tractor has the armor kit (protects the hood and should have some shields under the machine),

Good luck!

Thanks for the info Roy. A 4400 just came up for sale down the road from the 4410 for $10,500.

It is a 2001 John Deere 4400 Tractor and loader , 4-wheel drive, hydrostat,1900 hours, good condition, new front tires. Including implements; spreader, box scrape, auger, and plugger.

Sounds like it is probably a better deal.

I check them both out if someone doesn't beat me to it.

You can take the serial numbers of each of these (I'd think the 4400 is the better deal just on the surface) to the Deere dealer and ask them to bring up the tractors histories. That will tell you some more about when and where service work was done by a dealer.

The rental history might be a turndown for me.

You are lucky. Finding a 4400 or 4410 available around here has been tough, when a friend was looking hard a year ago. And I wouldn't sell him my 4300. :)

Doesn't look like the 4400 is going to last long, someone is already on the way to look at it. The ad just appeared a couple of hours ago.

Roy, when you check to see if the loader will raise the front end how fast should the engine have to be running? Should it be able to do it at idle?

it looks like it has rusty rims, and one rear tire is on backwards, but it may be the perfect "project" tractor if your up for the challenge.

I'd hafta say i've seen alot nicer condition ones around just by looking at the pics....

I always idle about 1400-1500 RPM and the loader should lift it at that RPM easily.

I didn't notice it initially, but Hanson brings up a point. That left rear tire sure looks like it's reversed (Not what you want with those tires). You should ask why.

That 4410 does not appear in too bad a shape. I would definitely ask about the backwards tire, it could mean the tire had been removed or replaced at a certain time due to a problem or potential failure. Thats the thing about R4 and R1 tires, they remove them from the rim and since they forget how the tire went on they just end up putting it on backwards. :confused2: Those shields on the 4410 are a big bonus, especially since they provide extra protection for potentially "fragile" areas that are easy to damage or break. I would just get on it, drive it around, use all three ranges (A,B, & C), try 4wd by either lowering the bucket to where the front tires are off the ground and driving in reverse or turning in a tight circle, you will notice a difference there between 2wd and 4wd. Check the oil, coolant, hydraulic fluid, fuel :)D) levels before operating the tractor and try to see if you can check the oil in the front axle as they do not put much in in the factory. Check all the electrical fixtures, lights, turn signals, etc. Ask about when it was last serviced and how often and what kind of use it has seen. Inspect the FEL, see how much if any grease is on the zerks, if there is any slop in the pins, see how well the hydraulics function by operating at full throttle, half, and idle while moving the loader joystick in diagonal patterns which will operate both lift and tilt simultaneously. Inspect the tires, check pressure if possible and make sure they are in fair shape with no big gashes or cracks in the sidewalls (unlikely unless the machine was kept outside). Operate the 3 point hitch up and down, try the PTO out. Try the park brake out, park at an incline of some sort if possible. After completing these tests, then you will have a better idea on your thoughts on purchasing this machine. Good luck!

Curious thing about that is R-1's and R-4's both have arrows on the sidewalls to indicate rotation direction.
Guess whoever swapped the tire didn't know that....but they would have if they frequented TBN!

I asked him about the tire on the phone, he said he didn't know why it was like that. I suspect that that is the way the tire happened to be mounted when it was pulled off another machine or something like that. Apparently he has used it for a year like that. Thanks for the help guys. Hopefully it will be worth bringing home today. I looked at prices on tractorhouse and machine finder last night, seems like not a bad deal at 13800 unless it is really worn out. Hopefully it has just been left outside some and needs a little touch up paint and polish.
