Looking to upgrade my 950 MFWD w/ 80 loader. Just got a price on a 990 and 4510, similiarly configured (4wd, DSCV, R4 tires, etc) The 4510 has a shuttle-shift vs the 990, and also a slightly larger (460 vs 430) loader. Pricing:

990 w/ 430 loader, MFWD, R4: $18,700

4510 w/ 460 loader, MFWD, R4, shuttle-shift: $22,500

I have not actually seen a 990, but I'm assuming it's similar to the 790 and my old 990 (ie Yanmar). I really like the 4510, but I'm having a hard time seeing $3800 advantage between these two tractors. Same engine & tires, shuttle trans and larger loader, but worth $3800? What do you guys think? Are these good prices? They include ~$1200 JD rebates each.

I have a 990 , and I am very happy with her ,,,,the 460 FEL is rated for 2400 lbs? I think,,,, where the 430 FEL is rated to 1500 lbs ...is it worth $3800 more than the 990 I can not say , look at the other options that go with 4510 that are not on the 990 .
I can only tell you I am very happy with my 990 .

Question for the 990 owners out there - having not run one of them, what is the trans like for loader work? I know it's not a shuttle, but can you shift from R into F (2nd?) without having to wait for all the gears to stop spinning? ie, is it a synchro? It's advertised as a collar-shift rather than a sliding-gear (like my 950). My 950 requires a full stop, full clutch, and some care to not graunch the gears.

Thanks!

My 990 is my first tractor , it is a gear tractor , and at this time and with my current skill level what little FEL I have done so far ,( much more needs to be done ) It's stop shift and go ....Yes you can grind the gears but I find that you really have to work at it to do it , I find the shifting to be very easy and smooth .
If you are looking for fast FEL work than I feel the HYdro Trans . are the way to go , I test drove one at my dealer just before I bought my 990 , for what I am doing , Small hobby farm , the 990 gave me more HP for the money but at the cost of speed in some work areas .......I can live with that .
As to going from R to say 2nd , or 3rd , yes you can do that ..but after a full stop , clutch full , shift and it go ...... you will have to understand how the lil' beast moves and take in to account the area of operation to safely do this , Ex. Would be how close to other objects are you and if you have room to do the moves at the speed you are going to use also working on a level or a slope will effect if you can safely do the FEL at that speed .

Very happy 990 Owner
