If your bush hogging tall, dry grass than I would worry about the horizontal exhaust. If it's just grass your maintaining on a weekly basis than I think you will be fine. The vertical exhaust will certainly be better though, and not only for the fear of starting a fire.

Everyone else must have problematic high maintenance tractors.

ROFL :D

The vertical exhaust is cool and actually well designed. I have it and when I bought the tractor I didn't even know it was possible to get a 4720 without one. When it was mentioned to me I thought "who would want a horizontal exhaust on a diesel engine, it'll soot up the exhaust area."

Personally I have always considered the pull-away design of the exhaust more clever than it seems at first; obviously it allows opening the hood but compared with a fixed vertical exhaust it also removes the nuisance of having to work around a (often hot) "post" in one's way when reaching under the hood.

I log in 400+ hours every winter on my tractor and open the hood maybe 4 times a month on average. I don't consider using the extra 10 seconds it takes to pull out the pipe as a significant waste of time.
