I agree if a turbo is definately what he wants, he really needs to have someone install it that really knows what he is doing or there could be some dire consequences. I also agree with Dave, that would be cool!

There is a thread somewhere on TBN where guys were discussing this generically. On some engines where a turbo is added, there are many changes, like compression and even piston cooling. On some models, basically a turbo is bolted on. If a person were to do this, a pyrometer would be a must have, melting down the pistons would be a bad thing. Of course an intercooler would help with that.....

I have a good friend with a 1964 Valiant Slant six. It is now fuel injected and supercharged, with an intercooler. Plus a 5-speed. With all the effort, he probably should have stood the engine upright and got rid of the slant as well. Of couse this guy is a mechanical engineer.

I am using a six foot mower running 5th gear so I am not out there for six hours but only three hours. It does do fine in second or third gear, but it takes all day long.

Sounds to me like you need a bigger tractor and a 15' batwing. That way you can get your mowing done in 2 hours. It's tough to have your cake and eat it, too. Remember if you "hot rod" your tractor, you most likely will cut down on its life span. If the bigger equipment is out of the question, then I suggest getting used to the idea of long days mowing. There is a reason that pumped up engines need to be rebuilt more often, and that is why you don't find them in standard cars, trucks, tractors etc. The longevity just isn't there.

Diesel engines work on an entirely different cycle than a gas engine. On a gas engine additional air flow gives more fuel. A diesel has no throttle in the air inlet; it is constantly supplied with maximum air. To vary power or speed you must vary the fuel via the high pressure pump and injection nozzles. You can not simply add a turbo and get more power; if fact adding a turbo will not give an increase in power. Only one way to increase power on a diesel; give it more fuel. Which means a bigger injection pump and larger nozzles - an expensive proposition.
A turbo charged engine is designed that way from the bottom up.
