Mowing 455 54 inch deck problem

Hi, I have a JD 455 which has lost all power at the cutting deck. When I engage the PTO switch the deck barely spins (i mean barely) and you can stop it by putting your foot on one of the pulleys.

I know this machine has a combined hydraulic system, the one pump runs the drive, the steering, the deck lift and the PTO, and all the things except the PTO work fine, so I am fairly confident its not a dodgy pump or something as bad or expensive as that.

Does anyone have any ideas? I thought it may be the solenoid located on the back of the transmission case but Im not sure how to test it.

I would start with the easy stuff. Is your belt OK that runs the deck and no idler pulleys froze up?

Sounds like it would be the belt on the mower deck. Look at it before getting a new belt. Could have slipped off a pulley or the spring may have come off/broke. Look at the PTO shaft that goes to the mower deck and make sure it's turning like it should. Dan

Went and had another look yesturday and it is definately a mid PTO issue, not a problem with the deck. The manual has some ideas which I will try out over the weekend.

Sounds like adjustment of the mid-pto clutch/brake.
Do you have the tech manual?

I just read about a similar problem, but
on this one they noticed a lot of heat
on the transmission, turned out to be
a faulty pto brake problem.
