Use the Low Viscosity HY-GARD in the front MFWD differential. It's the same as the fluid you use for your Hydrostatic transmission and hydraulics.

I haven't hit 500 hours on my 4600 yet - so I haven't had to change mine. I will be there soon, though. I don't like the dipstick that you use to check it as the color of the fluid doesn't register very well on it when you check it. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Good luck!

I think you are giving him the wrong answer. I believe he is right, to use the gear lube, not the Hy-gard. That is gears not the same as the transmission and hydraulics.

In my 990 and 970 you use GL-5 gear lube I prefer 80W 90 but I noticed for the new 20 series Deere's they recommend hydro fluid. I can't remember what my 4300 took in the front end but he could be right it is the hydro fluid.

It's what both manuals - on-line and printed - say to use. So I hope it's right....

Yep, you're right Bob. The manual states to use either Low Vis Hy Gard or Hy Gard. And from what I'm understanding from JD is they are recommending using Low Vis Hy Gard for all climates, with the HST.

Also, for those that have the older 4000 series tractors, they did change up the service schedule on the hydraulic fluid change and went to a bigger hydraulic filter. This was a few years ago so I doubt you could even get the old type filter anyway.

Thanks, Billy... I try to stay on top of this stuff as best as I can and sometimes even the local JD dealer gets miffed because my information is more up-to-date than theirs! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

The change in filter was noted in the on-line manual - but not in the printed version. When this changed it took some time for the dealers to catch up - my recommendation is that one always be wary to confirm parts, procedures, etc. before doing their own work. The web (and this site) is a better source than what the dealers can tell you - unless they read TBN too... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
