4610 Price/Equipment

Well - I'm starting to get really serious about my tractor purchase. The Barn is almost done - so now I need to fill it.... I have 10 acres - mostly brush etc. and I had narrowed my "candidate" list down to the 4410, 4610, & 4710. I have a small lawn tractor that I use for cutting the grass - so the big tractor will be for moving dirt, brush hogging, road maintenance, snow plowing, etc.

I went to the local Deere dealer (good guy - service on my lawn tractor has been excellent) and test drove a 4710 and 4410. I was worried that the 4610/4710- might be "too big", but it felt very easy to maneuver so "big chassis" it will be.

I had the dealer give me a quote on the following:
JD 4610 MFWD w/R4s, Folding ROPS
460 Loader, 61" HD Bucket w/removable cutting edge
Dual Mid-SCV with Third Rear SCV
i-Match Hitch
Speed Match w/Auto Cruise
Front & Rear Work Lights

His price - before rebate/before tax - was $25, 350. The Deere Configurator priced this combo at $30,112. That's about 16% below list... I suspect that this is "decent but not great". I'm pretty certain that I want to purchase from this local dealer as the service is very good. I don't want to get into a nickle/dime thing - but I do want a "fair price". I've mentioned other brands/models so he knows that it isn't a sure bet.... Is this a fair price/any thoughts on negotiating...?

You're correct. The price quoted you at 16% off MSRP is decent at best. A 'good' deal would be about 20% off or better. However, the 16% off MSRP shouldn't be altogether discounted. When I bought my 4710 this past May I shopped at 5 dealers. The dealers ranged anywhere from 12%-16.5% off MSRP, not including the $1,000 rebate I got. I bought from the dealer that offered me the best price deal and for other reasons as well.

If you haven't comparison shopped at different JD dealers I would recommend you do this if you have a sufficient number of dealers within a couple hours drive of you. It's well worth the effort. You get a 'feel' for how different dealers operate as well as having a range of prices to select from. Also, consider the reputation of the dealer. This is important. Best price and poor reputation or service are incompatible in my book and I would rather pay slightly higher if it means I wanted to depend upon a dealer in the future for continued service and parts supply.

I also thought the 4710 was somewhat big when I initially shopped.l Now, I think it looks and feels a bit small. I'd prefer one of the 5000 series models like a 5410 or 5420. But, I needed a compact to negotiate narrow logging trails I have and to fit in my garage. I'm very pleased with the 4710 and haven't regretted my purchase of it. Will be using it primarily for the same uses as you cite and I think you'll be quite pleased with the performance and quality of this product.

I took delivery of my 4710 with loader (4-in-1) and backhoe last saturday. Granted not much seat time as of yet but I did spend the weekend digging stumps and moving trees in close quarters and had no problems maneuvering. With my limited experience thus far would not want to go any smaller.

Thanks for your reply - it sounds like I'm in the right ballpark. I tried to stop by another dealer on my way home from work tonight but it looks like they have closed... I'll be stopping by another local dealer on Saturday (this one is a Kubota/Deere dealer - should be interesting...) I expect that his price will be similar, but it should be worth a trip. There are at least two other dealers within 30 minutes - so there is no shortage of outlets.

I know that a 5000 series would be too big - but its good to know you are happy with yours. Once I decide on the dealer I'll do the 4610/4710 comparison. My local dealer thought I'd be very happy with the power of the 4610 - but I plan on holding onto whatever I buy for a few years. My neighbor is onto a second tractor in 3 years - due to "upsizing"...

Did you "load" your tires? I've read the threads debating this subject and I'm voting against it. I see using a boxblade or ballast box being a "more flexible" solution.

I'll keep you posted as I progress - I hope I can order something in early Oct. The rebate deal is good through late Oct.

Bill, I have a 4700 with R4s - loaded front & rear. The only downside might be the extra weight during trailering. I really like it since it provides more flexability on lifting things without having to go back to the shop and changing attachments. (fence post removal, fallen trees, etc.). I like my compact for general use. I could use a bigger tractor if I hayed my fields myself but I've made arrangements with my neighbor to do it and also to disc & plant another field for food plots. Less seat time for me though.

There's not much difference between the two models except a few extra engine and PTO HP on the 4710 and higher engine torque on the 4710 vis-a-vis the 4610, as well as a slightly higher price. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif For me, after really wanting a 5410 or 5420 and compromising to a smaller tractor, I wanted the largest compact that they made. So, I settled on the 4710.

No, my tires are not loaded. There may be some benefits in it but I didn't want to fool around with filling the tires up with fluids. I chose to get a ballast box. If I'm not using the box I'll be carrying some implement on the 3PH. So far, this has served my needs well.
