Quick question - has anyone who has a 4600/4610 ever found themselves in a situation where they wished they had the 4700/4710's extra hp/torque? If so, what were you doing at the time?

If the right deal presents itself I'm going to take it either way. My first choice would be the 4710 (reverser) just so I don't have to 2nd guess myself, but if there's too much difference in the $$$ in the deals available locally - I'd like to know if anyone ever found the limits of a 4610's power that wouldn't have taken a 5000 or bigger to cure anyway.

It's the same machine except the pump is turned up a little more on the 4710. I had the pump on mine turned up a long time ago and I'm making over 50 hp. I wouldn't hesitate at all getting the 4610. If you find you are lower on power as soon as the warranty is out find a mechanic who can get you some more hp out of it.

I have a 4710, and there have been a few times I wished I had a bigger machine. But not often. Get what your gut tells you, and then don't get buyers remorse. I almost bought a 5420 - a lot bigger machine - but I'm glad I didn't. The 4710 with hydro is so sweet to work with, small enough to get around under and amongst trees, and yet powerful enough to run a 6' cutter in tall grass. So no buyers remorse here.

I think you'll be happy with either, so just go with your gut feeling.

Richard,

I think it's the 4600 that's got the hot pump over the 4500 - the 4700/4710 is supposed to have a 10% larger engine - I think that's all by a longer stroke crank.

Anyway - why did you have your's cranked up? Did you find the occasional need for the hp or just because you could? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

(Is that 50 at the PTO? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif)

I may be wrong then because I was pretty sure that the 46 and 47 series had the exact same motor. As far as hp yes I push mine to the limit all the time. I wanted all I could get. Now that I know the limits I don't ever get into too much trouble. If I was choosing between the two I don't think 4hp would matter alot in what you do with these two. The main reason I wanted more hp is to do the things that I normally do with the tractor faster. For example if I'm pulling a harrow I can now go in C range instead of B range uphills, etc. The guy I had tune up and raise my hp has a dyno. He had it at 57 overall hp and 48 pto hp. He said he had it turned up more but it got too hot. So far I have had no problems with mine getting hot.

4510 & 4610 121.7 cu. in. engines, 4710 133.6 cu. in. engine.

When I decided to trade my 4400 for a larger tarctor, I first looked at a 4610. I ended up buying a 4710 ehydro because of the larger engine & higher horse power. I have had the tractor just about 1 year & have 156 hours on it. I have not regretted the choice one time. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I ended up with the 4710 but I started off looking at the 790. I went from the 790 to a 4310 and then 4410 and then........well you get the picture. I love my 4710 but I never looked at anything bigger!

Just a little info on "tuning up" the injection pump, if the dealer gets caught doing that thay will get fined up to $25,000 a day from when it was done. Those injection pumps are set to meet certain emission standards and it is against the law to tamper with them. Just because the 4710 and 4610 have the simalar looking engines doesnt mean they are the same inside.

When I was looking at the various tractors, the 4610 and the JD 110 I believed shared the same engine while the 4710 went up in displacement slightly. My feeling at the time was that if the 4710 was much more expensve then the 4610, I would have no issue's getting the slightly smaller displacement 4610, and in some ways actually would prefer it. They use the same loader and share much the same elsewhere.

I have the 4610 w/reverser and as far as I know the pump has never been touched, It was delivered to me with 1.5 hours on it and about a week later the dealer put it on a dyno to break it in and when he was done he said it was putting 45hp at the pto. So far plenty of power.

Good luck Peter T
