My local JD dealer is about to take delivery on a new 4700 (HST / 4WD / R4 tires / folding ROP) from the factory. He says it can be equipped with the i-match hitch and already has the hydraulics to accept a FEL. He is willing to sell it for $18,300, which he says is below the cost that he has previously had to pay for this model. He insists that the TEN series offers no major enhancements that I would miss if I purchased this "off the lot" model at this price. The JD Brochure titled "The Tractor Redefined" has me thinking that anything less than a TEN series is an antique. Who should I believe - the dealer or the guy writing the marketing brocure?

The features on the new 10 series are great no doubt. But depending on your uses for the tractor you will get along just fine. Most of it has to do with controlling everything electronically instead of manually. Basically think of it as the difference between no power windows, locks, and cruise in a vehicle compared to one with it. You still have the same functions in a manual car but it's a little more convenient with the power options.

IMO, I'd take the price break and get to tractoring... There isn't much difference to worry over and you can take the extra dollars and buy more attachments. My 1050 is 15 years old and really the only things I miss are a shuttle trans. and more hydraulic power.

I'd second those opinions as well. Unless the 4710 came out with a considerably different set of specs such as loader lift or pump capacities which it does'nt, I should think the 4700 will do it all when compared to the 4710. The first thing I wanted to do after getting my tractor was to check into some accesories for the 3 pt hitch. I think you will too, with the 4700 you might just get them sooner.

I have a 2001 4700 HST that was purchased in July 2001. I have put 165 hours on this tractor with very little to complain of. The 4710 has improvements in the placement of the DSCV control lever and the hydro control sytem.

I have had no problems with the HST mechanical control system, but I did make a new arm for my DSCV to put it where it should be. These are a few of the cosmetic things I noticed:

4710 has black plastic cover under seat where 4700 has stell green painted unit.

4710 has Hella headlights where 4700 has JD units.

4710 has e-hydro electrical controls where 4700 has mechanical linkage controls.

The rest is the same including engine, pump outputs, and chassis.

I bought a used 4700 last December thru a dealer with 500+ hrs on it. It was a program rental to a peach farmer. I've put 435 hrs on it this year doing all sorts of chores. Some of the newer features might be nice but I probably wouldn't pay the difference for a 4710 versus a new 4700. Buy attachments with it. You'll keep finding new uses for the tractor and wishing you had just that one extra attachment to help.
