471 Hydraulics Issue

Has anyone else had problems with the hydraulics on their 471 w/ loader?

My father has one of these (2003 model bought in late 04) and he had an issue where he couldn't steer when the bucket was loaded. They "fixed" this by changing out a valve (as recommended by the factory) to allow the fluid to return to the reservoir.

Now, when the bucket is dumped, there is no pressure on the top side of the bucket and so it takes a few seconds of waiting until you can drag backwards with the bucket or even dig forward with it tilted slightly down.

Now they want to add a restriction in the line to keep the fluid on the top side so that the pressure will build up quicker on the top. This is going to probably cause the steering problem again!

Anyone else have any problems?

I attended a dealer meeting last year and there was a fair amount of discussion about a hydraulic problem with the 400 series tractors. The company said they had isolated the problem and were working on a modification/retrofit for it. Not sure exactly what it was, or which units have the problems but seemed there was some contamination that was getting in the problem units.

I would say either contact Massey directly or work with your dealer on it.

The dump problem is called captivation. It is caused anytime that the bucket dumps faster than fluid can get into the backside of the cylinders. It will happen to all or almost all loaders. Most manufactures are moving to a control valve that has a regenerative feature in it. This valve has a fast dump stage that will allow the exhaust fluid to go into the side of the cylinder that is drawing the fluid in. By doing this, it will eliminate the captivation. When you go to dump, is there a notch that you can feel? If there is you have the regenerative function. When you go to dump, go past the notch and you will not have the lag problem. I don’t know what loader you have or if it has this function.
