4710 Mystery - Need help

I was using my landscape rake to pull limbs out of an area I had just cleared, and got a limb jambed up under the tractor. Crawled under to get it out, and found this (see attachment). This is on the left side of the tractor between the hydro filters and the rear axle. No fluid was coming out, and I only had a little more to do, so I did it and went home. This morning, I inspected some more. The threads aren't damaged, nor can I find anywhere that it belongs.

So I chased the hose this morning, and found this on the other end. Looks like some sort of air filter?

So I'm worried that this is an air intake for the hydro transmission or something like that. Don't want to use the tractor until I know. This is a picture of the area of the filter end. It is tugged out a little.

So I would appreciate any help I can get. I looked on JD Parts to try and find a name for it with no luck. So if there is anybody out there with a 4710 or like model, I would appreciate it if you could look and find out where this goes, or if it does go anywhere. I'm on idle until I can find out. Considered pulling the operators station to get a better view, but that's a little extreme at the point. Hopefully this site will answer my questions. Any and all help appreciated.

It looks like a breather for the transmission to relieve the pressure build up. But I have never seen one that wasn't just screwed into the transmission housing with a metal cover.

It sounds to me like your 4710 is broken, and probably beyond repair. I'd suggest transporting it to me in CT and I'll have a look at it. I'm really busy right now though, so as compensation for the wait I'll send you my 4310 to use until I'm done working on yours... maybe the next 4 or 5 years I should be caught up! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It does look like an air intake - do you have a dealer nearby? If it was me, and my limited mechanical instincts, I think I'd drive to the dealer and try to find it on a new one.

That looks like the vent hose that is supposed to hook up to the MFWD actuator. It's on the left side of the trans housing just in front of the axle, at least it is on my power reverser. The actuator looks like a small hydraulic cylinder (it is) about a foot long or so. It will have a line hooked up on one end of the cylinder, and the breather goes on the other end. You probably want to clean everything up really good before putting it back together.

Figured it out after three trips to the tractor (15 miles one way from my house) and some shopping around town. It was a breather tube for a small hydraulic cylinder. As Jay said, it may be the MFWD actuator. I sheared off the barb fitting that connected the cylinder to the breather tube. After I figured that out, I pulled off the cylinder and took it into my local JD dealer. The pulled the leftover threaded part of the fitting out for me, but of course didn't have a replacement. They could order it - but that would put me out of commission until next week. Soooo, long story short, did a bunch of shopping and finally found what I needed. So I'm all back together and running fine. Now I need to look into some underbody protection to protect against stuff like this.

Josh, Did your dealer explain to you that you can get nearly every part from John Deere the next day? I've found that some dealers fail to explain this. I believe as long as the dealer orders the part by 2:00 pm the part will be at the dealership by noon the following day.

If the dealer just orders the part with their regular parts order then it is typically about a week. Now of course there is an extra charge for the next day service. But if my tractor is down I don't want to wait a week for the regular parts delivery.

An extra $5.00 to me is well worth it if I'm back in businesss the next day.

I'm fortunate as we have a John Deere parts distribution center in Syracuse, NY. If the dealer does not have the part in stock, they can place the order and I can pick it up myself (usually same day) at the distribution center.
