JD 5105
I just purchased a new 5105 tractor with a 48 backhoe. With the boom locking pin removed the boom drops down overnight so that every morning the bucket is resting on the ground. The JD dealer says this is normal because the
open center hydraulics allow the valves to leak down at a rate of
3-4 inches per hour. Does anyone know if the dealer info is on the level?

All hydraulic systems have built in leak by/bypass. This is designed to provide lubrication to the valves/cylinders and even pumps.

Not certain I agree with the "all hydraluics leak down". My old 4300 with GB 260 loader would stay up for a week or better. The 448 Hoe I have leaks down overnight unless the boom lock is holding it up. Bigger units (construction) seem to do a better job than the smaller ones such as the 4** series hoes . From what I can test the valves are holding, it is leak through the cylinders that is most of the problem. If I have a complaint about the jd hydraluics the rate of leak thorugh is it.

My 48 drops overnight, too. I wouldn't be concerned. The bucket tilt on my 430 FEL has just recently started dropping constantly, even when the tractor is running. It drops pretty fast, and it didn't do that until just recently. That has me concerned, but I think an overnight drop of the hoe boom is pretty normal.

My 8B does the same thing. I just keep the pin installed when I'm not using the backhoe.
