I am waiting for my 4944 it just came in and they are tuning and loading the tires. Also this is my first tractor and I am so excitied. Some people say i can run a 6 and some say that is to big i have 40 acres or brush i plan on mowing. any help thanks guys!!

Not familiar with your tractor, but mower size and speed to use are tractor HP dependent. I have used a 6' for years behind both an Oliver 77 with(38hp-drawbar-I believe) and behind my Ford 1700(23hp). The Ford had to be done with less ground speed, but did it. It's all about how fast you want to get done/travel. Which if you go to a 5' you're covering less ground in 1 pass. I personally like the 6' best as an all around size. Cuts alot at a pretty good pace.

I use a five foot with my 3940 and would not hesitate to use a six foot (eventually I will upgrade). The six foot will be a better fit for the width of your machine.

Don"t know the HP of your machine but the rule of thumb is 5 PTO HP per foot of mower and that is a good match it can be a bit lower but do not exceed the lift capability of the tractor.
So a 6 footer needs about 30 PTO HP and the ability to handle the weight of the mower.

Depends on what is being mowed.
I have 40 acres of Midland Bermuda/fescue/red clover/black berry vines/2 types of tall grass (6') /good old prairie grass/other weeds that I mow with a 6' 172 Rhino mower and a 50 hp tractor. It don't want any more especially late summer when the plants get dry and tough. We average over 40" a year in this part of the state so mowing is almost a continual thing.
I tried my neighbors 7' mower he uses with his 80 hp green tractor but to make a good clean cut I had to slow my ground speed to much plus the mower is a little on the heavy side for a 50 hp tractor when the mower has to be lifted on a hard turn.
Also I've found a 1/16 flat edge on the Rhino, on the mower blades, works best for 80 percent of what I mow. I have a old 6' Agri-Cutter that I keep a 1/8 flat edge on the blades for brush/dead wood/larger woody plants/etc. Keep the flats sharp and they cut so much quicker/cleaner.

Recently I have been wanting to upgrade from my 5 ft shredder. I have a 42 HP tractor and looked at a used 7 footer. I backed away for exactly the reasons you said above. I felt that it would strain my tractor, plus excessive wear on the rear lift trying to lift such a heavy mower. I went with a 6 footer , instead, though I have yet to try it out with some real cutting. It rained and I am waiting for the field to dry out.

I have a 5740C Montana and I use an 8ft HD mower that I bought with the tractor back in Feb 2005. I've never had a problem mowing heavy brush nor has it ever strained the tractor. The 5740C has 52 HP at the PTO.

I have a 4340 with 43hp and I use an 8 foot HD cutter.... My tractor runs the mower just fine.... but...... The mower is 2 foot wider than my tractor. I have found this to be a problem on uneven ground. The outside edges tend to dig into the ground.... Therefore I would not get a mower that is much wider than your tractor. A 6ft would have been a better choice for me..... I think this is more important than HP...
