4K TV's or not

We got a 4K UHD 40" Samsung 6500 smart TV 8 weeks ago after our Bose Lifestyle 28 DVD player quit for the second time - we went out to get the Samsung DVD player for $89 and the 4K UHD Samsung looked good we bought that too - $750 for both. This replaced an 8 YO 32" Sony LCD that weighed more than the 40" Samsung. We got a mount on Amazon for $30 now we can swivel for best viewing.

Usually I research things more but doing so after the fact Visio in the same size had slightly better ratings in color etc. A 65" 4K UHD for $998 is a good deal IMO.

Regarding TV's in general 4K UHD is a step to the OLED units which are $2000+ now, but probably will be the TV they are selling this holiday season, but next year it will be $1200 from $2K plus today.

It used to be one had a TV for 15-20 years but with the technology today they want to "push" new and better every year to get the replacement cycle 4-5 years - I am sure they have marketing figured out to keep people upgrading.

Wow, my head hurts from looking at TV's. I think I want a 4k TV just so I'm set for a few years once the content catches up with the TV's. I know the 4K's also up convert the 1080 stuff too. Been looking at Samsung, Vizio, LG and Sharp. Thinking I want a 60", have a 65" rear projection Mitsubishi DLP now, great TV by the way. But I want something I can mount on the wall. I get an e-mail from Sams Club this morning for a 65" Vizio Model D65U-D2 for $998, special deal for tomorrow only, even has free shipping if I buy online. Problem is, it's a brand new TV, no reviews yet. Guess I can always take it back if I don't like it. Thoughts? Recommendations?

Thanks

We have the 65" Mitusbishi DLP tv and I do not see a reason to buy a new TV. Seems like the TV is 5ish years old and I replaced the bulb this year. Not sure it was really needed but figured after five years I might as well replace it and in another five years we will likely want to replace the TV with what ever is the Latest and Greatist. We paid $800 for the TV, from Dell of all places, when other stores were selling for $1,200. Whatever TV we do buy will have to be the same size and cost $800 or less.:laughing::laughing:

Later,
Dan

I would go with the 4K. I know the arguments about the lack of 4K content and the apparent limitations of seeing the differences at normal viewing differences. All those same arguments existed when we went from 720 to 1080i to 1080p but I could always see a difference in quality.

The better quality TVs have very advanced interpolation logic that simulate higher resolution and it makes a difference in viewing quality. My first HD TV (a Samsung DLP) surprised me that it could make standard definition (SD) TV signals look almost HD while other HD TVs could not. Even if you can't see the pixels, the tone gradation makes a difference in perceived image quality.

My home theater Panasonic projector provides a very sharp and pixel free image on a 10 foot diagonal screen from 1080p sources but has terrible quality from either SD or 720p sources. On the other hand my Samsung LED HD TV does a great job with SD signals.

This is an area that Samsung has excelled in (and I'm sure other makers do well with now) and I would carefully compare the Vizio ability to scale images to 4K before making the purchase.

The refresh rate might be more important that pixel counts. No LCD looks better than my 1080p plasma. HS

And how is this any different than any other electronic gadget? People don't seem to have a problem with replacing their cellphone every year or two, even though the old one was working just fine.
This past summer we replaced our 15 year old tv, not because the old one was broken (it isn't), but because it didn't play nicely with cable, and because it was a bit small for the room. I don't see any reason we won't keep this one for many years too.

I was wondering when someone was going to mention this..
The higher the refresh ,rate (or what ever your brand calls it) (samsung calls it clear motion rate) the more the TV cost.
This is what I looked for when I purchased my 4 K tv

4K content is growing. Dish, DirecTv & Netflix all offer "some." There are other sources - and it is growing.

The up-converting is good and, in my opinion, beats the 1080 sets.

We've been looking at the Samsung 75" un75ju6500 set. It retails for about $3299. Most of the online dealers that show $2700 or so have all proven to be frauds .... "we don't deliver there."

SamsClub has a Black Friday deal on the Samsung UN75ju641D for $2398 (or so). This model number is "retailer specific", so it does not show up on the Samsung website. I called them and the rep says it is the SAME UNIT as the UN75ju6500.

Here's hoping I can catch one before they're all gone.

I was looking at the U6500 60" version, that series of Samsung seems like a pretty fair bet? Not too expensive but decent otherwise?

Tom,

We got the 40" U6500 series and the picture upgrade from our 8 year old 32" Sony flat screen to this unit was amazing - better picture, better video, sharper and for reference our chairs are 9-10' from the 40" screen. The upgrade is the U7100 series and the results are noted here.
