4wd engagement

   / 4wd engagement #12
Front lead ratio means how much farther the front tires travel than the rear tires. In 4 wd drive, you want the front tires to travel just a little faster (farther) than the rear tires so they "pull" the tractor. If the front tires travelled slower, the rear axles would have to "push" the front axle around. A slightly positive front lead ratio also helps when turning as someone stated before. The down side of having incorrect front axle lead is excessive turf damage, excessive tire wear and overloading the front axle differential. On turf tires, you want a front axle lead ratio of 1 - 3%. On ag tires and R4 tires you want a front axle lead ratio of 1 - 5%. If the tractor is going to be used often on a lot of hard surfaces (i.e. concrete), use a 1% lead ratio irregardless of tire type. Tire pressure and tire size both affect front axle lead.
