4WD final drive, gear oil instead of "hydraulic" fluid?

DieselPower, I agree completely in terms of a thin hydro fluid. Makes you wonder why they dont develop a 0W 20 for hydro so you can have good efficiency from startup instead of having to wait til the fluid thins. ??!

Actually they already do. It's called Special Low Temp Universal Torque Fluid. It's viscosity is 5W/20 and is designed for year round use, with better cold weather performance.

Who makes it?

Synthetic fluids flow better than regular oils at low temps also, so I'm sure you will be fine. M1 15-50 synthetic motor oil flows better than regular 10-30 at low temps. You should check their low temp flow data before switching, but I'm sure than a full synthetic 75-90 such as Amsoil, or Mobil 1 gear oil will be better than regular UTH fluid. As stated before the 75-90 can be referenced on the chart, and only has flow of a 75 weight, while maintaining the protection of a 90w. :) Plus the added resistance to shear that a full synthetic oil has. Usually 3 to 4 times greater than regular oil.

Thanks! Meets the NH spec! So they call it [FONT=Arial,Helvetica]"SPECIAL LOW TEMPERATURE UNIVERSAL TORQUE FLUID", I assume that is just another name for hydraulic fluid?

No, it's a UTF, a low temp UTF. Hydraulic fluid does not have the EP additives to handle gear lubrication that a UTF fluid has or the anti chatter additives for friction disc lubrication. Basically UTF is a highly additized hydraulic fluid, basically.

Thanks for the info! Wonder what it costs per 5 gallons and would it be worth using?

It's sold in 6 gallon pails that cost $89.50, 35 gallon 1/2 drums at $511.00, 55 gallon full drums at $764.50 delivered and with free UOA's for the life of the fluid.
