Hello all,

I need help!
I was moving some dirt on my 1500d today and I heard a loud clunk from the front end. After that the 4wd on the front did not work!
The tires still turned but there was NO drive power there. I checked the 4wd lever to ensure I did not hit it into 2wd, but it was OK. I tried to move the lever from 4wd to 2wd and back to see if this might help - no luck!
My questions are
1. where should I start?
2. Do I need to take the front end apart?
3. do I need to check the wheel hubs?
4. do I need to check in the tranny?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Jeff

put the tractor in air then you can see if it's in one of the axle sides or in the main differential or even if it's in trans in rear just turn the wheels and then hold one if they seem to be locked check by turning both rear ones and see if front ones turn simplely track the power flow..

Re: Loud Clunk?

I just went through the same experience last winter. Unfortunately, you may want to start saving $$ now.

1.) With the front of the tractor in the air and wheels free to
turn (tranny in N) -rotate the front wheels. When you spin
one side, the other should spin the oppossite way. Listen
for little clunks (like sound of broken gears). Don't be
afraid to really try to rotate them hard by hand. If you have
broken gears in the outer drive housing(s), just gently rotating
them may not sound/feel bad.

2.) If spinning both wheels shows no sign of a problem, your issue is either in the front diff or the tranny. More work.

I have an old 'green' style 1500D and needed to replace both outer drive housing king-pin shafts, both king pin double bevel gears, and necessary bearings/seals. Someone had done a total cobble job of repairing the things at some point in the past.

I could only find one king pin and one double bevel gear in the whole USA. So me and the boys at work custom made a bronze bushing, and rewelded/hand-ground teeth-tips on the other double bevel gear. Worse yet, the king pin and double bevel gear that I was able to buy were pricey.

All together I had about $750 into completely rebuilding both outer drive housings. Hopefully your situation will work out better. If nothing else, I certainly think twice now about tweaking the clutch to 'dig in' while 4WD is engaged.

If you have a front end loader, rear wheel weights are the way to go for sure. I have a 5' hyd. loader on the front of my yanny, and can add either 300lbs or 500lbs to the rear wheels.
It makes a big difference when moving dirt/using the loader, and the weight is right where you want it for traction and stability.

Re: Loud Clunk?

OK so here is what I have done.

I picked up the front end and spun the front left tire. The front right tire spun in the opposite direction. I did notice that the drive shaft did not spin. I did not think anything of this since the rear tires were still on the ground.

Next I kept the front tires raised and then raised the rear tires. I spun the left rear tire and the drive shaft spun but neither of the front tires rotated.

I suspect that:
1. there is nothing wrong with the tranny since the drive shaft was spinning.
2. there is a problem in the front differential, since neither front tire rotated while rotating the rear tires!

Can anyone confirm my suspisions?

Thanks,

Jeff

Re: Loud Clunk?

Try spinning both front wheels in same direction that should turn the rear drive shaft. or hold one of front tires and spin both rear tires in same direction.

if the front tires rotate in opp. direction that tends to lead to everything in front is ok might be u-joint on front or possibly the pinion if it has one not sure as to how yanmar's are setup.
On my tractor everything on drivetrain in undershielding.

Re: Loud Clunk?

With all four wheels off the ground, i would do this. With the tractor in 2wd, and the trans in neutral, turn both fronts the same direction at the same time and see if the driveshaft is turning. Leaving it in 2wd will help narrow down the problem for now because your not doing anything with the rear end or trans. If it is not turning, then it must be something in the front diff. possibly broken teeth on the ring and/or pinion. Or maybe, like shady said, the shaft or u-joint.

If it is turning then it seems like the problem would be in the trans. Another thing you could try, and I know I'll get hammered for this, but, with the tractor in the air on JACKSTANDS, start it up and put it in gear and in 4wd and see whats turning and whats not. If you're not comfortable doing this, by all means don't.

Re: Loud Clunk?

I figured out my hino by running it up in the air. Though make sure you get it standed good those rice tires realy vibarate.

It had a broken cv-joint on left side of axle when power went to front end it simply went left to non-attached wheel and had no pull on front end. But sound to me like ring-gear or maybe even u-joint since you said when you rolled the back 2 tires in same direction in 4wd the front shaft turned eliminating rear end.
Good luck a front end for mine was $1700 if i bought a complete unit. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Re: Loud Clunk?

I had a simalar problem with a 1702D. The front won't drive and I started tracing the problem and found out after I seperate the front drive that there were 6 allen head screws that held the ring gear in place. The had come out and was in the bottom of the case. I simply went to the local hardware store and bought 6 more screw and put it back together and its running fine. Open up the drive on the front and don't expect the worst. You might be as lucky me . The screws cost me about $2.00 /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

OK, I have narrowed down the issue.

It looks like where the drive shaft meets the front axel coupler is not engaging.

I understand that there is 5 ball bearings in the coupler that can pop out of place.

My question is: Has anyone ever taken this apart? I have removed the spring and supposedly the coupler should slide back but it does not!

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Jeff

Does it look like a cv joint or something else?
