4wd not engaging - ym1510d

On the YM186D you can replace the four wheel drive shifter without splitting the tractor.
In the picture that winston1 posted, you can see the large nut #3, unscrew it and the shift linkage all comes out except the block #10, which is on the shaft #8.

Thank you for posting that description! Repairing it sounds reasonably simple.

I vaguely remember a post long ago where he repaired the inner tip attached to that horizontal shift rod, or something like that, and he had accessed it from beneath the tractor.

You need to drain the transmission before taking that rod out, no?

Alrighty then. The nut on the 1510 and 186 is the same (194301-22860) so all should come out on the 1510 if it will come out on the 186.

So I’m trying to take off that nut as suggested. Can’t get a wrench in there in it. So I pulled the spring pin to pull the lever off, then I was going to put a socket on that nut and take it off. I can’t get that lever off. Any suggestions?

So far I’ve tried:
- grabbing and pulling with pliers
-sprayed with liquid wrench
- heated up with propane torch and pulled

My next though was to cut off the lever short enough that I could get the socket on the nut then I’d either buy a new lever or weld the lever back on. Thanks for everyone’s input so far.

High heat and penetrating fluid, or candle wax. You might try tapping it when it is warm and you have the penetrating fluid on. MAPP gas if you have it. You want it to get hot as fast as possible.

Do you have a gear puller that would fit?

I wouldn't worry about the nut until you have the lever off.

I rented a puller from o’reillys, but it’s too big. There isn’t really much to grab onto either, unless I could get something to go in those two holes where the spring pin was. If anyone knows where I could get one that small I’m all ears. From what I could see at Harbor freight i didn’t think there was one that would work for me.

Agreed on not worrying about the nut until the lever is off.

Personally, I would try candle wax, PB Blaster, more heat. Sometimes time is your best friend.

Do you have a needle scaler or impact hammer that you could use to apply a little vibration to it?

I would be reluctant to apply much force to the lever itself for fear of damaging items inside...

I think using a tie rod separator or bearing separator would apply too much force to the bushing at the inner side of the nut if the lever is severely stuck. Could you install that just snug, then pull on it with the gear puller?

I agree, best would be heat combined with penetrating oil/candlewax, and vibration. And time - overnight? - to let the heated penetrant migrate in.

Cutting the rod off to get a socket in there is an alternative too. It shouldn't be difficult to weld that back together after its off. Maybe take it to a pro, if needed.

If nothing works - I had an idea: Thread short bolts into each side of the hole, if you can find some that are a snug fit. Bolts so short they can't reach the rod. Secure each with a locknut. Then use a two-jaw gear puller.

Or - Cut a notch in a big socket to get it past the lever. Maybe reinforce it with a hose clamp? From Ebay, or if you have a used tool store nearby, a single socket shouldn't cost too much. I have a store like that near my home that will barter my unused extra stuff for something I need, at about 1:4 value ratio. I don't remember what I took in but my 18" socket-set extension came from there, for example. I've bought a couple of other things there to modify for one-time use.

Had a friend come over and he put a long pry bar in there and wiggled it off in less than 3 minutes. It was slightly disappointing to me how easily he got it.

Got the broken pin out and I’ll see if hoye has any used ones otherwise I think we might be able to weld it back together. We pushed the lever inside with a screwdriver and jacked all the wheels up to confirm the four wheel drive is now working. So glad I didn’t split it apart like my initial thought was to do. Should be pretty easy from here. Thanks everyone for your input.
