Im suspecting spider gears in the front diff.

With the front wheels lifted, i get three different results by turning the front wheels. Turn one wheel other moves opposite (normal] then a click or pop and both wheels turn freely, not turning the other....or after another noise, turning one wheel turns the other the same direction like a locker does.

Input appreciated.

if you have four wheel drive engaged and in gear you should wheel turning opposite as described if you have four-wheel drive not engaged both wheels will turn the same direction and the drive shaft should turn it could be you have a problem in the 4wd transfer box with slipping in and out of gear

With the selector disengaged i have all three scenarios. Free spin...opposite directions....and both same direction.

What happens when you engage 4wd

The other tests I would recommend is to lock one wheel with chocks or get someone to hold it still and then with 4wd disengaged turn the other wheel and check if the driveshaft turns I would expect resistance but still be able to turn the wheel and the drive shaft to turn
then with same set up with one wheel held still and 4wd engaged try to turn the remaining wheel it should not turn

Best test is that last one. 4wd engaged, one wheel held/chocked, try and rotate the other. You shouldnt be able to other than to the limits of the gear slop. If you can rotate it, you may have a driveline problem. With the other wheel free to rotate it sould always rotate in the opposite direction. The only way it can rotate in the same direction is if the driveshaft is rotating.

Retract the metal shield pipes on the driveshaft and see if it turns. Be sure to pull the cover over a concrete floor or spread a tarp. They use low budget CV type joints and sometime they loose their marbles into the shield. This is one type failure that can occur driving in 4wd on solid surfaces...
