Tractor
Kubota M7040 cab/hyd shuttle - current, Kubota L3400 - traded
Could anyone in the know tell me what sort of changes have been done to this series of tractor - in particular 4520 from 2006 on to now?

What was the first year of production for this design?

There was a used 2006 4520 in this area and I'm wondering if there is any real difference in the features or any known issues fixed between then and the 2011 models.

Anything in particular to check out on this machine if my wife does give me the go ahead to look further into it? It only had 130 hours or so.

I do believe that the first year of the new 4000 series was 2006 but it is a great tractor, I have the smaller 3000 series tractor and it is a beast. 99.99% of the tractor is the same, the .01% is nothing huge. If it is a great looking tractor I would go for it. A Deere is the best tractor you can get for the money. A Kubota might be a little cheaper but the American made quality of a Deere way over powers a Kubota any day. Owned many many Deere's and I've never had any major problems compared to the other tractors I owned. Jump on that Deere if it's a good deal.

The only changes I am aware of,
in 2009 they increased the hp from 53 to 60 hp
in 2011 they modified the hydraulic valves to include electric operated controls.

The JD Power Tech engines have always felt stronger than their advertised HP, so one wonders whether they may have been conservatively rated. As the other posters have stated, these are great machines. Perhaps no better testament to their durability exists than my neighbor. He does much of the road side mowing and paving of our neighborhood roads and does medium-duty landscaping work. He is supposed to be semi-retired, but he is clearly not. He has a 4320 which he works ALL the time. He stores it outside, and it looks fairly rough from his treatment of it, but I believe he said he was approaching 4000 hours. These are hard hours, up and down mountains, hauling heavy rocks and trees, repeated bucket work and running a side-saddle flail mower for hours on end. His tractor still runs great and does not miss a beat. That's a lot of hours and he has essentially done only routine maintenance and not too much of that.

I called the owner of the machine today and while he had taken down the advert and planned to put it up in the fall again, the machine is still for sale. He is asking ~$35k. The machine has ~120 hours and is a 2006 so it is practically brand new.

After test driving a new one at a dealer and to try to compare new prices as soon as I got in the cab and on the seat I immediately had the feeling of 'ah ha' - this just feels right.

I've been incredibly happy with my Kubota so far so I was on the look out for a similarly sized Kubota and they are slightly less expensive but the only ones that have come up for sale are not private sales so with 13% sales taxes it is a wash.

Unless I come up with a really good reason why not I think I am going to pull the trigger on this machine as it seems too good to pass up!

The JD dealer here told me that the 4520 and 4720 has a electronic linkage between throttle and HST pedal so that it only throttles up when you push the pedal down.

Any idea if this is new or was there in the 2006 model.

That price seems in line with the one my old Kubota dealer has. I came close to buying it. Very clean with 80 hrs. Cx loader, 3 function.

Thanks for that link RockGod. This one does not have the CX loader but thats fine for me and prices here are higher anyway. The lack of sales tax is what this makes this a really good deal for me.

You've got that right. At 8% that's an additional $2880. With that cash you could buy that ATI adaptor easily :D:thumbsup:

If it only were 8% :) We are at 13% sales tax here! It does not apply if the tractor has 60+hp at the PTO - which is just too big for me.

canoetrpr,
I have the upgraded cruise option about $100 over the regular cruise as I understand. This includes the e throttle that you mentioned above. Mine is a 2009 with 60 hp, might wan't to ask if this is backwards compatible if you don't have this option.

What attachments are you getting with this tractor?

Any idea how I can tell if this option is present by looking in the cab? I can check it out when I visit to put down a deposit. If it does not have it then I'll ask the dealer I have put the additional rear outlets in what it will cost to do now.

This is a 2007 so the hp will be 53.

I have a slew of attachments some of which I will sell and get bigger attachments that are better sized for this machine.

I could probably do with my 5' Woods rotary cutter but prefer one that will cover the width of the rear tires so i can get close to the fence line. Heck I'd prefer one that would overhang a bit but that might be overkill.

I'd also like to sell my 68" Walco Meteor and get a 72 or 74" blower.

I will definitely be getting a hydraulic top link. Can't live without that now that I have had it! Not sure if mine from my L3400 will be long enough. I think it might not - I'll check. If not, I might keep it anyway as I am purchasing another tractor - a old MF 255 to pull my manure spreader - and might want to put it on there and get a remote added.

The JD TnT seems quite expensive and I have never used my side link. I might either get a local hydraulic shop to build me a top link cylinder or get one from CCM.

Is that the "Automotive throttle"? IIRC - that's a more recent option - later than '07..

Might not be retro-fitted. I'd be talking to a local dealer - shop foreman.

canoetrpr,
You should be a politician, long response but didn't answer my question.

The reason I asked was I paid $34,000 for mine new in 2009 with all the weights and options. So I was wondering what attachments or implements you were getting for $35,000.

I should ask when I see him, sure would like to add that to the 110.

I installed the upgraded cruise option myself seems like I had to remove the standard cruise switch and install two or three new ones.

Will you have a loader on this 4520 or not?

 It has the 400x loader, bucket, radio, various additional mirrors and work lights, iMatch, air suspension seat, rear wiper, block heater, hood guard, third SCV. No attachments.

I priced out a 2011 at a dealer and the price with about the same options was $45000 + 13% tax. That represented a 7200 $ discount from Canadian list price. $43000 is 18% off which is the best I have heard you can get here on a cash price.

Looking at used 4520 prices for similar hour machines with similar options on tractorhouse in the USA, $35000 seemed to be along the same lines except if I imported from the USA then I would have to pay 13% tax at the border.

If you paid $34000 new AND got a loader AND other attachments, I'd say that is an incredibly good deal and perhaps I ought to reconsider buying wherever you bought and getting it shipped!

That's a pretty good savings on that "06" 120 hrs isn't much for these machines. That said, if you can get 18% off list on new thats pretty good imo. Around here I had to fight and claw just to get 10% off. Here dealers don't wanna budge much.

BTW- jenkinsphs price was w/o the loader. He uses his 110 for loader work.
