Word of advice for any Hemi owners: Make sure you read the owner's manual! Regular fuel (87 octane) will work in this truck, but the knock sensors will cause the timing to back off and degrade your fuel economy! The factory recommends 89 octane in the Rams with the 5.7L Hemi, and also states no added benefit will occur if you used an octane higher than 89. Premium would essentially be a waste of money. Also, be advised that anybody with an '06 Hemi in a regular cab 1500 or quad cab 1500 with the MDS engine, you MUST use the proper grade of oil! It calls for 5W20. Improper oil weight can cause the MDS to not function properly or not at all.
I had a customer call me last week complaining that his '06 Ram was down to 9 mpg. I asked him what grade of gasoline he was using, he said he's always used 87 octane, and since he doesn't hear any engine knock, it must be ok. I told him to change to 89 and let me know how it works. When he stopped in on Thursday, he said by switching to 89, it took it from 9 mpg to 15 mpg. That was actually better than I figured it would do, but as long as he was happy, I was happy. I also told him that recent gas price hikes have moved many gas stations to start implementing the use of adding up to 10% ethanol to the low grade stuff to keep it cheaper. Ethanol or ethanol blended fuel does not burn as hot and can result in less power, less fuel economy per gallon than a "real" gasoline.
Something to think about.
