5" Angle Grinder

They all need some quality grease and a dollop of Power Punch in the gearcase, regardless of brand. When I was looking at getting a Milwaukee, I found that the 4.5 and 5" had the same 12.5A motor, the additional $20 or so was for the guard, which stays in the box since I run a sanding pad on it.
Earlier someone mentioned running a 9" grinding disc on a 7" HF grinder; I'd look at the ratings before doing that. If I recall, the HF 7" runs at 8500 rpm and most 9" wheels are rated at 5500-6500 rpm. I wouldn't want to be hanging onto that if it grenaded.

I've got a couple of the big HF grinders. The gyroscopic effect of the 9" disc is a little more than I want to fight. The 7" ones suit me better.

I just re-checked the specs on 3 of my non-HF grinders

The 4.5" milwaukee is 10a and 10k rpm. (earlier I mentioned 11a and Iw as wrong)

The 5" hilti is 8.5a and runs at 11k rpm and not 9a I mentioned earlier

The 6" metabo is indeed 12.2a, and has a variable speed wheel with a max of 10.5k rpm

Changing that to surface speed, the 4.5" milwaukee is the slowest.
milwaukee 10k rpm @ 4.5" = 11,775 SFM
Hilti 11k rpm @ 5" = 14,391 SFM
Metabo 10.5k rpm @ 6" = 16,485 SFM

Not a noticable difference in weight oer heft in any of them. But they are noticeably heavier and longer than the HF 4-6a ones I have. Truth be told, my method for picking a grinder out of the drawer has more to do with whats already on it than what brand, speed, or power it is. I do grab the 6" if I need to run a big cut disc to get into a tight area.

Here is a side by side. Dont pay attention to the missing guards. I was too lazy to put them back on. Usually dont use them when running a flapper or wire cup. Only if running a stone or zip disc.

I have a 100 gallon compressor with about 20 CFM, and you still ain't grinding long. Unless you have a big diesel compressor or something similar that would be about worthless. I don't think you could get there with 50 amp 220. That is solidly in 3 phase territory.

,,,?? ... 2 stage or single stage compressor? -- I ask because my 2 stage 20cfm [set for 160 psi cutoff] will hold at 150+ psi while using the grinder heavily. Cuts off seconds after you stop. :confused3:

I have a big 7" one that you can lean into. I don't use it very often. I much prefer to work a little longer with my 2 pound air grinder vs using that 15 pound behemoth.

I had my fill of the HF grinders. While cheap, (recently on sale for $5 for the 4.5in ones). I can bogg them down with even light grinding. Bought a 7in hf and blew the head off it the very first time I used it. I have burn thru several Makita 4.5in. and 5in. This year I went with the Milwakee 4.5in, 13amp I believe, but might be mistaken, and a Dewalt 7 in not sure of the amp, but went with the largest of the two on the shelf. I tried the dewalt with a 7in cutting disc and it scared me enough to take that disc off and probably wont put it back on. To much torque and just to heavy to handle to be cutting with. Might try another 5in grinder for cutting, but it wont be a makita, Dewalt or Milwalkee for me. dont know where to find a Metebo around here

I find that with the guards on the grinders I grind the meat off my fingers much less often. Those sores hurt like the dickens a day or so after the incident.

It will run my air grinder continuously, but it only pulls about 5 CFM. I was meant it would only work for a few minutes with the huge 30 CFM grinder in question.

makita 9005. Pretty much the standard in 5"ers around here, especially for the price. Walter Super5 or Big6 (Metabos) are better, but the 9005 is the standard 5" in most shops ive been in.

Hey Mud... Does sound like you like to lean on your grinders. True I sort of take my time with my HF grinders and baby them a bit, but I sure like the price. I can afford as many as I want. Normally I preach and buy high quality $$$ tools...grinders are too easy to max out and burn up, even the expensive ones. Ben dar dun dat.

If you are using an electric tool keeping your hands off the cooling vents helps a lot to extend the tool life.
