Barry1 -- yes, that's a nice option to have. I installed a Temp gauge, and if I can't keep temperatures under control, I will add a water pump... or upgrade to a tractor with a water pump. :)

While reading about the suggestion to get more air flow into the radiator I happen to think about what if using a larger or a 5 blade fan could help to better pull more air through the radiator? just a thought, although I'm sure if the radiator becomes clogged it won't really matter how much air draw the fan can provide if cannot pull through a clogged rad.;) i would suppose the best is to prevent the rad from becoming stopped up in the first place,
Now if we could only cut grass at a faster speed:rolleyes: say like 35 mph we could setup a fresh air cowl inducted system to funnel the air to the radiator:D

BTW when cutting fields with the stuff flying everywhere don't forget to check/clean/replace the air filter more often as well,

Yes DND you have got the idea i was trying to point out if you have enough junk on the screen if dont matter if you have the engine fan an electric fan and a giant hurricane NOOA fan in 60 degree temps, if that air cant get to the radiator cause of a buildup of fluff you will still overheat.

I bought a 4' Woods Billy Goat bush hog today. It needs a little TLC (like my YM1700) but seems to be in pretty good condition. Change the oil, do a little sanding/re-painting, sharpen the blades... hopefully that's all it needs.

Is it normal for oil to leak from the lower seal? It wasn't leaking, but after I spun the blades around by hand a few times with the top fill plug out, it started to.

No, after a while you will be out. You got a bad seal like im fixing now, read my post in the attachments forum. I have been adding oil everytime i use it for the last yr, for the first time in days i use it its a complete fill about 3/4qt. I have a 5 gallon pail of 90wt so its not that bad of a cost.

Mine one i got it out had a wad of junk that got up in there and tore the seal like the second time i used it after new!! But i was cutting like 6-7 foot vines blackberries and 2 yr grass so it was getting extreme use. I think it was the viens that wrapped up and clogged the crap up there. It aint as easy as it looks!!

It sure sounds like it has a bad seal, what type dope/oil are you using?
although try putting the plug back in and see if this slows it down any ....
just like changing the oil in your car engine the oil tends to run more freely while the oil filler cap is off.. right! same as when pouring gas from a can, it has an air cap to loosen that will allow the gas to pour more freely,
as said no doubt you have a bad seal but with using a thicker oil or even I've heard some folks use grease in the gearbox to prevent having change the seal,
