Tractor
1948 Ford 8N and 1993 Toro WheelHorse 520H
For my mowing needs I use my New Holland TC18 and a First Choice 5 foot finish mower and Ford 8N with a five foot brush hog.

Long story, but I'm not able to drive the 8N at this time and I have brush-hogging to do. I plan to hook the brush-hog to the TC18 tomorrow. It may be a little bulky and heavy for the small tractor, but I'll give it a try anyway. At least the property is very flat for this test run!

Anyone else have experience with a 5 foot rotary cutter on a Class 1 Boomer?

I run a 5' Bush Hog on a 43 HP Ford 2120 which is the same tractor chassis as a TC48/55. I don't find that any too much tractor for the Bush Hog when cutting anything other than grass. I know many users on this board, run large mowers on small tractors, but I think they are asking for trouble. I'm still paying for a $2100 repair to my 2120 PTO caused by a 72" Bush Hog.

It will all depend on what you are cutting. A nicely maintained field with a few black tops from bahia, and a stemmy dry weed or two.. I'd say you are fine.

The mid 20 hp N was as about as low as hp as is practicle to go for every day mowing. 30hp at the pto and up can move you into 6' cutter range.

I used to run a 5' mower on a 1920.. the 1920 deffinately wanted a 6' cutter.. didn't even know the 5' was back there...

Again.. it all depends on what you cut. As Andyma points out.. his 2120 9 bigger than my 1920 ) was being worked by a 5' cutter.. obviously he cuts some serious material.

Short answer... Yes.. I expect that if you start at a low rpm, and slip the clutch a little, that the mower will spin up. I also expect it to actually cut as long as the stuff isn't high or thick.. in which case you may need to take 4' or 3' passes.

My little IHcub with a whopping 10hp engine runs a 44" rotarty cutter... heavy grass bogs it down.

I used a 5' hog on a 21hp 1320 for quite a few years. Mostly cutting trails through the woods, so not so nice terrain. Never had a problem. I think you'll be fine. Just take it slow when you need to, listen to the engine. If it starts to bog down just slow down and let the engine catch up.

1320 was 21 hp. I thought they were 18 HP.
