Jazz, I'm also confused like Farmacist over your "valve" in the drain plug. Is it possible someone at the dealership added some type of drain plug that didn't require complete removal. I never saw anything like that on my tractor. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Mine is just two simple drain plugs.
I checked my Illustrated Parts Manual and both plugs only have washers attached in the manual also. I had first thought that you might have a later model tractor with something different, but I see in your profile your tractor is a 35D. I'm a little worried that your plug with the spring and balls was actually a check valve or something and not the correct plug. I guess it worked okay because you got it back together. If you do get a chance to take a picture sometime and point out the location of the plugs you removed, I'd sure like to see the location, because your experience is very different from mine. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Well wouldn't you know it? I went outside to snap a picture of the plug, and in the process of doing so, found the actual one. Funny thing is, when I had the tractor in my garage, I looked all over trying to find another drain plug in the center, and having only found this thing (which I now know is not a drain plug), used it. Luckily I was able to put it back together properly, and it also provided a decent drain for the oil, however I fear that I might not have gotten all the old oil out.
Everything is working fine, so I hope and pray that I haven't messed the hydro system up. NH was nice enough to include an icon of a book near it, but not nice enough to actually say anything about it in the book itself.

Jazz, what you removed is the pressure regulating valve for the entire hydraulic system. That's the valve that sets 2500 PSI operating pressure. The book icon means you are supposed to refer to a book (the Repair Manual) before making any adjustments.
Since this is a pressure regulating valve, the only danger is if you increased the pressure. If so, you could overstress your hydraulic pump, or other hydraulic system components like the FEL or 3PH.
Here is what I'd do if I were you. If you have some way of measuring the maximum pressure in your system, you could check and adjust the valve, but my guess is you don't have the gage and fittings required and since I've never adjusted my pressure, I can't really give you good advice on what to do.
The best idea would be to talk to the service manager at your NH dealer. Tell him what you did and that you need to have the pressure checked/adjusted as necessary. He may have a simple solution, I'm just not sure.
In the meantime, I'd be careful lifting anything that might be at the limit of your hydraulic system. Until you know whether the pressure is high or low, you just can't be sure whether there's any real danger to the system.

Jazz, I'm home tonight where I have my Repair Manual and it says you change the pressure by removing or adding shims to the assembly you removed. If you put everything back together exactly as you removed it, you should be okay. There should be a cap-plug (the hex nut you removed) followed by an o-ring, then shims, a spring, and a poppet valve. If you lost a shim or got it out of place, you might have changed your pressure. The good news is that removing a single shim will only change the pressure 150 psi, so if you lost a shim in the oil, you are probably okay. It may not be as critical as I made it sound in my last post, but I'd still get in touch with my dealer and talk to someone with experience rather than a techie wanabe like me. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
