Guys, I already bought the Echo Timberwolf! Haven’t used it yet, but for my needs I doubt I’ll ever need a bigger saw.

Also, I’m sure people already know this, but some Stihl products are made in China. So blanket statements for any brand are probably not the best.

It all comes down to what you want to spend and what type of support is available in your area. Stihl is never a bad choice in the pro line and support is out there. However, you're going to pay for it. Echo on the other hand can be purchased at big box stores and they always start when you need them to. They're choked down with their muffler and tuning but that can be fixed.

I don't think either brand is a wrong choice.

Your cell phone is made in China too. Even if it's an iphone. China can make quality parts. If Stihl has current model parts made in China (I've not seen that myself) they'll be up to Stihls' quality requirements.

There are a lot of Chinese parts for old out of production models of Stihl (and Husky and Jonsered) saws. In fact you can buy a complete parts kit or as of recently even a totally assembled saw. The parts vary in quality from eh to pretty darn good. I'm assembling a MS660 clone. The cylinder's not bad at all. I did a little touch up on some ports but I could have run it as it came. So far the only tweak I have had to make was seating a locating pin a little deeper in the case.

Guess some folks are behind the times china. Here is a pic of a 250 a few years ago. Sold in Canada.

Stihl also owns the zama carb factory in china too.

If you look at ours here is US they are assembled in Va beach with foreign and domestic parts ;)

Dont drop dead looking at the pic

Though I hadn't seen Chinese made Stihls myself I'm not surprised. The last three Stihls I bought were made in the US or Germany (and I understand that "made in" does not mean all the parts come from there).

Guys, I already bought the Echo Timberwolf! Haven’t used it yet, but for my needs I doubt I’ll ever need a bigger saw.

I was originally looking at a couple different models of Husqvarna (the 460 or 465 Ranchers) and someone suggested looking at the Echo 590 as it's a better value. After looking at the Husky's and the Echo saws I feel like the Echo saws are made better and have pro features the Husky's don't have. I also looked at the difference between the Echo 590 and the Echo 620P and will be getting the 620P soon.

By what standards? It’s got a pretty awful power to weight ratio.
We also have an MS271 Farm Boss with 18" bar. It has an anti-vibration system, good-sized toolless open gas and oil tanks, really effective filter system, and a side-access tensioner that is easy to adjust.

As more weight means heavier materials and damps vibration I'm fine with it. That model has been around since 2015 with universally excellent reviews and they sell tons. The primary competitor seems to the the Husky 450 Rancher and it's 1 lb less, only speci difference I note is slightly smaller fuel and oil tanks.

My personal experience is that what sets Stihl apart is largely their chains: which I suppose you could fit on any brand.

I had a 590 to test out that I bought like new. Check that H setting. They like it rich IMHO 12.1-12.3 was the sweet spot on my stock muffler modded one.

They come to lean.

Back half of thread info on one I got etc. http://chainsawrepair.createaforum.com/echo/cs-590-wolf-review-bone-stock/

Would this apply to an Echo CS490 as well? 10cc smaller than the 590, but I bog it down a lot when I think it shouldn't. 100% better than the 37cc Ryobi it replaced, but it still struggles a lot at times.

I just restored an 034 Super that was made in "West" Germany. Not as much Discipline as the East German saws. :)
