Wonder if there's a shady mechanic out there that would have put the lid back on and said all finished...!

My father had a Massey Ferguson 35 once that stripped a gear in the differential. When he drained it and took the top cover off he discovered 3 wrenches in the case! One of them had worked its way in between the ring and pinion gears and caused the biding that stripped some teeth off. It didn't really surprise him though. This was a tractor that was sold to him as having been completely refurbished and in top shape, only to have the engine seize after a few hours because the dealer's mechanic had rebuilt it using whatever mismatched parts they had laying around the shop.
