Both my CubCadet 7300 and the LS R4010 have the exhaust lower front left, maybe 18 inches below the filters' air intakes. My LS had the air intake on the bottom of the canister and I rotated it to the top and gained about 8 inches more relief from the exhaust exit.
It has been my experience with my 7*** Cubs that after blowing the dust away for many cycles, it is the soot that finally wins the day, and with all the dust blown away, the rubber tube to the intake of the engine goes flat from vacuum. I have to assume the paper element, when totally black, is sealed with that very fine soot. I haven't used up the first air filter on the LS yet. Still drawing easy there.
