Yup, all the same experiences here. The tech at my JD dealer told me the dye is really to aid in spotting leaks at the QC station at end of assembly. I was one of the original hinge plate leak customers and the red helped me to spot it in the snow last spring.
My manual specifies either LowVis or Regular depending on the temp range. My dealer tech told me that the LowVis was probably better for my needs and it was listed as the first preferable option. If I lived in the Southwest or any other areas with hot temps year round, I'd probably opt for the regular based on the manual's temp chart.
BTW, isn't that suction filter a PITA (Particularly Irritating Technical Application) /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif !
