I'm trying to decide if I should do the 50 hour service or let the dealer. I do most of the maintenance work on my other vehicles, but this is my first tractor and diesel. How difficult is it? Is it possible for a back yard mechanic with the shop manuals to do it right?

Yes, and even without the manuals, there is enough information in this forum to give you a PHD if you read it all... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It is easy, you can do it. If you have HST just make sure you have a large container to catch all the hydro fluid. The manual is fairly easy to follow and if you get stuck or have any questions we are here. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Save yourself some cash and do it yourself. If you change the oil on your car you can do it on your tractor. It is pretty basic. If you have any questions... just ask. There are tons of people on here that are willing to help.

Notamustang,

Darn, I was thinking if I just read enough I could have a Post hole digger.

I know you do not have a BX but here is how I did it with my BX. I would think it is the same more or less, just more fluid to deal with. If you have the time, tools and a way to dispose of the fluids, why not just do it no better way to get to know your tractor and spend some quality time together. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Just don't forget to put lots of old newspaper under it before you drain the fluids. Lots easier to pick up the oil soaked papers than to clean the garage floor.

The 50 hour service on my B7510 was relatively easy. Since I wanted to do future service myself I did the 50 hour service.

As someone else said, make sure you have a big enough pan to catch all the trans fluid.

BTW, since I work in the woods a lot I keep a spare set of filters and enough oil and hydraulic fluid on hand so that if I aaccidentally punch a hole in a filter I can change it and refill the tractor where it sits. I did have one transmission filter that had a pretty good dent in it from where a stick had hit it.

DO IT YOURSELF! I have a $300.00 invoice sitting here from the dealer for the 100 hours service of my BX22. They had to come to my house to look at the hood (due to the great hood recall) for the RTV so I asked about the service on the BX. Said it wouldn't be a problem and we would split the cost of a service call. Some how they ended up changing all of the filters and cartridges. These items are not due for replacement at 100 hours.

Two calls to the service manager, two return calls with "I'll look in to it and get back to you" and I don't know any more than I did a month ago.

I'm still looking for a piece of paper that says that the hood on the RTV is OK.

I left my original dealer and followed the salesman that went to a different dealer 15 miles futher away in a different state. I bought the RTV from this new dealer, but so far, I'm not real happy about the service. I think it might be time to start looking in the Lancaster area for the new attachments that I want!
