I have a feeling this might get an oil war going and I hope it doesn't but has anyone else felt the 100 hr oil change is overkill? I'm running Royal Purple synthetic and I just dont see the need to change the oil again. I run it for 7K in my motorcycle and 7k in my truck. Why should the BX get it changed so soon. I would think that anything that is going to fall into the oil would have by them.

Ideas? Comments? Am I an idiot.

I just did my 100 hr and I recommend that you definitely change out the air filter. I posted a pic compareing a new filter beside one w/100 hrs on it and there is a very visable difference.
I'm running Kubota 10w30 dino and the oil was so dark brown in color that I could barely see the stick. Color may not be the best indicator of the oil's quality but it generally is a good indicator of it doing it's job of cleaning whilst lubricating and dark brown oil = dirty oil to me.

Considering that the next scheduled oil change after the 100 hr isn't until 200 hrs are you sure the synthetic will go that long?

Scrounger, my manual's out in the garage, but for my GC2300, I'm pretty sure the recommended changes were at 50 hours, then after ANOTHER 100 hours (total 150 hours). I did mine just 'cause I wanted to stay within warranty intervals (there's a whole 'nother story on MF's typos on those interval guides), and I figured it was relatively cheap insurance for the tractor. Is it possible your BX is supposed to have its' oil changed at 50, then 150?

Engine oil changes are cheap insurance for many reasons not just warranty. I too switched to synth at 50 hours (Rotella 5w40), but will change at 100 as well, just for the "insurance" factor.

I would do the air filter. My air filter was pretty bad but the last oil test showed lower Si then anything I own! If you go by the book (manual) you only need to do the oil filter every OTHER oil change.

How long (hours and time) on the oil? Also RP oil has 2 different kinds of oil. one is group 3 (dino) and one is group 4.

I (myself) go by time and not hours on 99% of my engines. Coming up on another 1-year on my gsxr and just complete another 1-year on my car.

Chances are the oil will be fine IF you tested it. If you don't test, you are guessing and would dump it. Plus if you use adds in fuel, you might see if in your oil tests.

Also side note: color of oil really means nothing.

Different strokes for different folks.I too am using synthetic oil.I am going to do mine every 50 even though its probably not neccasary. Just did 150 last night. The kubota filters are inexspensive, and it only takes about 3 quarts, its good peace of mind.I always change my oil in my vehicles every 3000 faithfully, thats why they are always going strong over 200000 ,the bodys usually fall off first from the darn road salt up here.My craftsman 11 hp rider is an 87 ,still going strong, oil gets changed every 10,kind of over kill huh?

The way I see it....oil and filters are a lot cheaper than overhauls.

I run synthetic in my BX which I use in my part time landscape business. I'm actually streaching my oil changes out to 150 hrs since I put on quite a few hours and 100 just seems to comes up too quick. Another fact to my decision is that the oil is still quite clean after 100 hours and the BX engine is generally running at a pretty light load compared to other equipment I have operated. I'm no longer concerned about warranty since mine is over 5 years old and I'm over 1000 hours. I know oil is cheap but every 50 hours is not neccessary although if changing it that often gives one that extra peace of mind then more power to them. I suppose that some owners may not hit 100 hours in a year and it might just be easier to do an oil change on an annual basis.
