JD 790
I am closing in on the 40 hour mark so I am looking to go pick up the filters/fluids for my 790.

Guess I am going to go with the JD 0-40 synthetic oil and the JD filter. I like Mobil 1 filters but I had no luck finding the right one in stock. I also looked at getting the hydraulic fluid filter while I was picking something else up, but the truck parts store was out of stock. At $23 the Hastings hydraulic filter doesn't seem like much of a bargain, I guess I should go get the JD hydraulic filter anyway.

This is what I need can anyone give me an idea of prices as the local JD guy is kinda high. Just wanted to know if I'm getting scalped. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

engine oil filter
transmission/hydraulic filter
low-vis Hy-Gard 5 gallons (need 4)
JD synthetic motor oil 0- 40 5 quarts (need 4.3)

Thanks

Stick with the JD filters. And do yourself a favor and use synthetic oil after the 100 hour service. And if you plan on changing the suction screen then make sure you get a new gasket or o-ring for the screen flange. JD filters arent all that expensive, they are cheap considering the job they do.

I have read that the JD filter was a Fleetguard and I understand they are very good filters. I will stick with the JD filter for the hydaulics but I would get the Mobil 1 for oil if I could. Every rating I have ever seen has Mobil 1 at the top. At $11.99 a filter they better be good.

I was going to go with as good or better I'm not looking to get the $2 Fram filter but I understand your point. When in doubt go with the JD filter you can't go wrong.

thanks for the 0-ring tip.

P.S. are you suggesting I wait for 100 hours to go synthetic?? I won't be sheduled to change oils until 250 hours after this 50 hour service.

I've read a lot of posts which mention a 100 hour service. My owner's manual for my 4200 specifies 50 hours, 200 hours, 400 hours and a couple things at 500 hours. Different machines with different schedules, perhaps?

F-350, I have seen several debates about the synthetics and weather or not to start useing them after the 50 hour break in or changeinging the oil/filter again at 100 hours. The thought process seems to be broken in Vs well broken in. I will go with the synthetic at the 50 hour mark. Mobil 1 is oem fill on many high performance vehicles. The standard Jd oil is actually a synthetic blend anyhow. Some say there is not enough friction with the synthetic to seat the rings. I think that is more speculation than fact but when you are working on your own machine your opinion is the only one that counts. It surely wont hurt to change the oil at the 50 hour mark if you feel that is a better set up. How many hours per year do you anticipate ?

Scott:

When I bought my 790 the dealer told me when my 50 hour service came along he recomended refilling with the JD break-in oil and new filter for another 50 hours, This cought me off gard I still have plenty of time to ponder this being I'm only at 16 hours.

Now that I've said this it dosn't mean I will do it and I don't want a bunch of Oil Gods jumping on Scott's thread with there "why my oil is better then your oil " but I will be happy to read any ideas or thought on why he may of said this or any info you may know about rings seating and a motor becomming "broke in"

PS
Scott:
I've been sitting on this info sinse I bought the tractor and this looked like a good place to plop it out there I hope it dosn't interfear with the info you were trying to get from your thread.

Well this is something that I have also been tossing around. I was thinking maybe I'll split the difference. Instead of going with break-in and having to do another change at 100, why not follow the book? I can change the oil at 50 hrs to JD dino and then NEXT change (250hours) go with JD synthetics?

The internet is great but I am wanting for the old days, when we just went out bought what was on sale and drove our vehicles.

I have information overload /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Don't worry Whiskey, I was already confused, now it's just public knowledge /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

F350

Here are the prices from my local JD dealer.

oil filter M806419 $6.59
hydro filter RE27284 $18.15
JD 0w-40 $4.98/quart ordered in case lots only since my dealer does not stock this oil.
JD Low-Vis HyGard $33.00/pail or $2.23/quart

Use Rotella and buy it in the cases for about $1.25/quart. Use Low Vis Hygard that is for JD from Farm & Fleet for $24/5 gallon pail. Same or better stuff and alot cheaper. Heck even the parts guys at JD say their oil is overpriced just to use Rotella or equivalent.

I paid the following at JD

oil filter 5.99
hydr. filter 17.00
Plus 50 oil 7.50 gallon
Low Vis 35.00 5 gallons

I read there oil ratings and it SEEMED to be rated higher than Rotella and slightly higher than Delo.

I am sure Rorella is fine but my PSD never runs as quiet on Rotella as Delo. I dunno if it's more-anti-foam in Delo or if the high pressure injectors like being driven by the Delo but it surely runs different.
