Are they good tractors? I am planing on getting one in the next couple of years. Opinion?

I have the big brother to that tractor and I love the 5M series. Not too big but not too small, a happy medium that tackles some chores bigger tractors do but can happily do some chores a smaller tractor does as well. But in the end it depends what you want to do with it of course but if it does fit what you need to do I think you will love it.

No experience with that model, but do with a previous JD in that range. You should be very happy with a quality JD product.

Well... I like mine well enough that I'm not gonna sell it or trade it when I buy a bigger tractor for haylage bales. I plan to keep it for as long as I'm baling hay! That said; as Corey mentioned - a lot depends upon what you have in mind using the tractor for.

It's a very well constructed tractor, comfortable, great control layout; great fuel economy, good low end torque and the electro-hydro 3pt is light years ahead of the old, position control 3pt hitch.

My next tractor will likely be another M - probably 115hp, though.

What is your fuel economy like?

Don't fall out of your chair, and don't have a heart attack, but in a few years I plan to buy a 5085M for 7.5 acres!

Well, the last time I really worked the tractor was baling hay for the neighbor. I baled around 1,800 bales in ~13 hours on the tach and didn't have to refuel. Tractor has a 30 gallon tank and I want to think that there was 2-3 gallons in the tank at the end of day 2.

I was pretty impressed! Last year I only baled around 700 bales and didn't really pay much attention to fuel useage.

Well... that's ONLY 11.33hp/acre!

Let's see.. I've only got around 13 acres of hay out of 30 acres; so, that's 5.76hp/acre. (You win!!) ;)

But... If you're happy --- we're all happy!

 Lets figure this out. 7.5 acres of say corn at 133 bushels to the acre comes to 1000 bushels per year at $8.00 per bushel for 7 years will bring in $56,000. Looks good but wait a minute there is the cost of seed fertilizer, herbicide, fuel and property taxes to deduct and there might be a drought in there or a price bust. You might need to find some more land to buy or lease to support a 5075M in the manner they are accustomed to.

The 5085M won't be purchased as a money maker.

In about 4 years time I will be completely debt free. I plan to save for 1 - 2 years to build up a cushion in case I ever lose my job like I did a few years ago. The 5085M is just a want, DEFINITELY not a need. I grew up with my dad hauling heavy machinery and working on short line railroads. I love big machinery, the bigger the better. That is why I want a 5085M.

Want to hear the real kicker? 3 acres of that land is the home front, where my X740 does all the work and finish mowing. So in reality, the 5085M will be used for 5 acres of land. The nice thing about having a bigger machine is you complete your work a lot faster than if you had a smaller one. I know it is a complete waste, but truthfully speaking, if I go ahead with a 5M, it will likely only work about 6 months of the year, and maybe only a few hours a day.

I should mention the other reason for the 5M is a good friend of ours lives a few miles from us, and farms all of the surrounding area for hay. He said when I have a big machine and I am ready, he will pay me a straight hourly wage to operate my tractor with his attachments. I figure that will be my chance to start working for myself more than for someone else. I miss the old days when I was self employed. Heck, even if I just want a weekend in the cab, I can do it at my leisure.

All the power to you! Who cares if your only using it on 5 acres, if you can afford it, and want it, go for it!

I use my tractor for a lot of jobs that I couldn't get done if I didn't have it, like many of us, but at the end of the day it's nothing more than a toy for me-just the same as my boat and motorcycles.

I can claim that I use my tractor on a total 78 acres (27 in MA and 51 in NH) but truth is, out of all that land, I'm probably only using it on maybe 5-10 acres MAX! I also want a larger tractor.

It doesn't matter how much land you have (or don't have).

Oh I understand and agree with your attitude. Just wise cracking for the fun of it.
I'll probably never break even on my own JD but it will be there to do what I need done ,when I need it done. "Priceless"

True that!

I will most likely try and find a used one. I imagine a fully loaded 5085M with a few attachments could reach $65,000 - $70,000. That is definitely too much for me. I just want that deluxe cab, and a powerful loader with a grapple. Sure, it's a big machine, probably uses a lot of fuel. But what would take 3 hours in a smaller machine could be done in 1 hour on one of these. It rains 7 months of the year where I am, so a cab is a DEFINITE must. One of the most frustrating things is when the weather dictates your schedule.

Exactly! The larger tractor actually uses less fuel per unit of work accomplished then a smaller unit. That and total acres per hour during a short planting or harvesting season is why big Ag tractors exist.

It's interesting to see what choice we all make with our machines. I have 12 acres of hay field out of 20 open ( pasture and orchard for the rest) and rather than keep my TN75DA which is just like the 5083e I went smaller with the 4520 because I use a haybine, sickle bar, and a square baler. It's working out pretty well because I love the eHydro for mowing and I don't do a ton of tillage. Occasionally I wish I had the bigger tractor, especially when it moving materials like lime around but for the most part it's all good.

I did have my neighbor come to help me with discing the other day. He brought an 8320 and a 20 foot disc...... too bad the field was still a little wet. He can do my field in 20 minutes for what takes me several hours....

I sure do.

Born and raised in Saskatchewan until a few years ago. Moved out here because I met my wife to be out here. As they say, the rest is history. I am in the Lower Mainland, where are you located?
