5085M Error Codes?

This new tractor with 400 hours is throwing some error codes, and the dealership isn't real snappy interpreting them for us. Where can we get that info? Is there a John Deere utility for a laptop we can get?

Last time it was the fuel filter, even though there was no noticeable drop in performance.

Would a service manual have the codes? Or do you need some type code reader?

Many owner's manuals will also list the codes in the "trouble shooting" section. At least the ones the factory thinks you should be able to remedy. A complete list should be required in every owners manual with the correct action needed to remedy it and oh by the way, is it safe to still operate the tractor?

If they were tight on space they could leave out the first two chapters showing us pictures of all the safety stickers, their locations on the tractor and why we shouldn't operate it until they have been replaced if for some god awful reason they should fall off. And yes we can get three addresses and two phone numbers (one toll free) where we can get replacement stickers but how about just one number to call to find out what those flashing numbers/letters on the dash mean?

If they were in the owner's manual and the dealer had one, (which he won't) he could at least pretend to know more than we do. Maybe even know what the problem and fix was and wouldn't have to dodge our calls until he can get ahold of the "guy" who knows. Rest assured, he doesn't work at the dealership.

Is that your LS dealer that you are refering to? In his defense, I'm sure that many LS dealers are poorly trained, and lack general knowledge of the machines that they sell. I do think that after a couple decades...with some experience under their belt, they will be able to support the machines that they sell.

All of the error codes should be in the service manual...at least they are for my 4720

Well no, actually I have had zero problems since I bought the LS and it has the codes in the owners manual. (If I ever had to use them) I was talking about his John Deere.

Ya they're not in the operators or basic service manual. I haven't bought the technical manual, probably need to get it if I can't access online. Usually buy them for each tractor, but sales guy indicated something about it online.

Dealer called back and gave me the two codes of four I did not have on my list from last time - a DPF code and a VIN # one. We'll at least keep a running list. I'll figure out how to clear them in the morning. I'm hoping it is a sensor issue, or some phantom codes, the machine mowed all afternoon.

Do any of ya'll have the computer interface for john Deere, with JD Service Advisor? Not having that for these modern tractors is like not having a set of combination wrenches. I knew what I was getting into, but I am not a patient man when a machine is down, and I can count on one hand the number of times I've had the dealer get involved repairing John Deere tractors over years - all warranty. Good equipment and regular service helps, but who has time for these guys to take your machine to learn with for a week or two? With overnight parts, we have had little downtime over the past 15 years, knock on wood.

Anyway, the machine has run 400 hours in three months or so, and is the best small utility tractor I've ever operated. I'm not going to get too bent out of shape about it, but man, I need to have whatever those techs have in the shop.

I don't know of anywhere you can get software to "talk" to John Deere tractors other than getting dealer to connect to them. I'm sure it is only a matter of time before someone develods something. Deere won't sell the program to anyone but dealers. There has been some talk of a limited function version of Service Advisor for customers, but don't know if that will become reality. Your dealer should be willing to print out a list of all possible codes and what they mean.(it is a long list for IT4 engines) If you post your code numbers here, I will be happy to help as much as I can from here.

And this is part of the reason I won't be buying any tier 4 tractors. DPF, DEF, and a whole bunch of things that just make the fuel economy and reliability worse like they did with the trucks.

I would think that it will only be a matter of time until the EPA mandates a standard interface the the computers..like they did with cars, the OBD standard. They even standardized the type of plug.

I believe this was the one I saw the Deere dealer using. It covers lots of ag equipment but its a pretty steep yearly update fee.

Sorry, I did not. We ironed out the wrinkles in that machine, and I changed careers to ag commodities. Just signing back on because I bought a JD 332 for the home place.

I guess a few months delay isn't as bad as several years - it has been a very long time since logging in!

Happy to have a green machine to fuss over and help us on our 2 acres with yard and garden. Got a model 80 cart as a worker, looking for rototiller 30".
