Dumb Question #329A.1(b): How do you know if the hydraulics are hot?

My main problem yesterday was that the AC worked, but was overheating the engine while bushhogging a way-too-late first cutting. So at about the hottest point of the day, I switched off the AC, the temp gauge dropped nicely, the tractor ran well for the rest of the day, but the cab became a hotbox. It was about 93 yesterday and dripping humidity in Virginia. We have had the AC compressor replaced two years ago and the engine oil is overdue for replacement. That may be related. The tractor is not in constant use.

I grab the hydraulic lines at the back of the tractor close to the hydraulic connections..Those lines are metal and get so hot I cannot hold them with a bare hand..
My tractor has been to the dealer twice for a.c. problems.

I'll check that out on my metal lines. There are signs of a small leak under those lines (right side) on my right rear axle. I don't see any leaking, but the residual grime is definitely there.

I traced my AC latest overheating problem back to an operator problem. The radiator wasn't hosed off after the last mowing/baling job, which was done late. So the radiator screen was clogged with hay seed. That was hosed out this morning and my brother says that the temp gauge is behaving well. I have a love/hate relationship with my JD, but I think the feeling is mutual.

I had Kubota and loved it for many many years..I regretted trading for my 5093E but it must be growing on me as I had a chance to sell it for what I paid and didn't do it so I know what you mean...

... I shift out of 4WD by switching to a low gear ...
4wd come out much easier in
Low range A OR mid range B
As mentioned with light pressure on shifter, clutch work and / or pulling slightly forward or backward.
All technique as you said :-D

I suspect it's common for this tractor..Have you had any other problems? I ask because my hydraulics run hotter on this tractor than my Kubota did and I can hear a rattle from the rear..

Mine is a little difficult too. Haven't come to peace with a method, but I have a few more things to try now...

I checked the metal hydraulic lines after doing some bush-hogging the other day and sure enough they were quite warm, although not so hot that I couldn't hold them. So what is the impact of hot hydraulics? I should change hydraulic oil more often?

My 4wd is hard to do as well. When I take it in and out of 4wd, I get it rolling in about B range 4th and flip the shifter into neutral and pop in out when there is no load on it. Works good for me. Mine had A/C issues as well. Had it in 3 times last summer for it. I carry a can of Freon in there all the time. now. last year, I had to charge it up before I used it every time. I think they might have finally found the leak, because this summer, it seems to be working . I also use the a/c on defrost in the winter to pull the moisture off the windows. I works much better than just heat.
