anyone know of a really good manual at a reasonable price that could help me feel my way through this? also any advice or knowledge of special tools needed?? also a good source for quality parts.

I suggest you get the tech manual. Take at look at selectmanuals.com you can download a copy for $29.95. If you want to order from JD here is their site it will be a lot more expensive. I also suggest you search this site as there are a number of thread discussing the 5000 brakes. If you do not already know of it I included the link for JDparts.

Good morning Joe I just got a 2005 5105 and the brake pedal goes all the way down with no braking effect. Any idea where I should start, the tractor only has 1027 hrs. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

A good place to start on brakes is turn yoke on rod so as to shorten distances between yokes on each brake operating linkages.
