As a first time larger tractor buyer I have been comparing brands and models. I am fairly settled on the JD5105 4WD with the 522 loader, 72" bucket, hoses and the JD Grapple bucket.
The price came in at $28,000 + tax. I don't know if that's good or not.
I am in Southeastern Louisiana. Is there a part of the country where the pricing may be appreciably less and worthy of a drive? I don't know how much wiggle room these JD dealers have.

The grapple seemed to throw the price up. It was $2,600 on its own.

Any suggestions or advice is appreciated. I don't plan on trading in any time soon and want to make an informed purchase from the beginning and not something impulsive because I really like it.

thanks

Tony,

Look at the thread below started by Tarheelman about the price on a used 5105. Follow the link in there to price out your tractor in the Deere website. As suggested, you should shoot for about 20% off of MSRP.

One of my brothers owns a 5105. If you have a minute, take a look at the review I posted. He has over 300 hours on it. He had a hydraulic problem where the 3PH would not lift, but the dealer promptly came out and fixed it for free. That is the value of having a good dealer. Deere would cover the parts, but not transportation. The dealer ate the transportation cost. The 5105 overall is a really good machine.

Greenrules,

What a coincidence. One of my brothers has a 5105, too. He likes it a lot, but it has had the same 3ph lift problem - 3 times! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Each time the dealer has replaced parts (I'm not sure which ones), and my brother is hoping that "third time's a charm" applies here.

In August I purchased a JD 5205 (step up from 5105) 4wd with fel (72" bucket) & canopy for $25000..No tax involved for farm use in Texas..Your price sounds a bit high for a 5105..

The 5105 4wd, with 522 loader, bucket and JD trash Grapple bucket actually came in at $27,800. The grapple and additional hydraulics is what drove it up. The margin must be fairly tight. Out of 5 dealers I spoke with, locel and long distance, the gap was only about $1,200. High on one piece, low on another but the bottom lines all were close. I'm trying a couple of dealers up north, but don't expect anything earthshaking.
thanks for responding all.
