I am looking at two tractors. One is a used 5210 2WD, with 340 hours, auxilliary hydraulics on the back, adjustable 3 point hitch, and a canopy. The other is a new 4700 HST with a canopy, hydrostatic 4 wheel drive, non adjustable 3 point hitch. Both have been quoated with 460 loader, 613 cutter, and a 6' box scraper. The 5210 is $22,150 total and the 4700 is $27,750 total. Any comment or opinion on these two tractors/pricing appreciated.

As much as I like the 5000 series, if you are deciding between a 4WD 4700 versus a 2WD 5210, I'd go with the 4700. 5000 series are real nice tractors but I personally wouldn't buy one without 4wd. Now if you can find a 4WD 5000 series with similar pricing to the 4700, I'd take the 5000 series in a heartbeat.

I agree with ejb...

Usually the price difference in this hp class of tractors between 2WD----> 4WD is about $3500.

What you should do, is find out exactly how each piece of the package breaks down in price... also you should be able to buy a new 5220 MWFD pkg. even less than the 4700 pkg. price you quoted... /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Sparky,

Search TBN for my posts around Oct/Nov of 2000. I posted my prices for my 4700 and equipment. It was a PowerReverser and not HST. The price of the 4700 seems high to me.

I see VERY few low hour, late model used JD tractors on the market around my parts. A 5105 just showed up with 50 hours and it was selling for danged near what I remember the going price.... 340 hours is not that many hours. I have put about 250 on my 4700 in 12 months of weekend work. Actually its less than 12 months since I did not touch the tractor in October and there was another month in the winter where I did not get much tractor work done.

4WD makes a difference. It really has suprised me when pulling a box blade or doing other work where traction gets iffy how much a difference 4WD helps. On the other hand, the 5210 is a heavier tractor which will help the traction.

I did not think you could put on 460 FEL on a 5000 series. Never asked the question just assumed you could not.

What are you going to be doing with the tractor? Are you going to need a backhoe? Ask if the JD48 will fit on a 5210 if you need a backhoe. A year ago my the only JD option for a backhoe was 10K+ for a 5000 series. If you are just going to be doing some gravel scraping with the box blade and rotary cutting go with whichever tractor has the best price. But if you are going to be out in the mud, doing lots of FEL work, you might want to consider the 4700. HST makes it easy go back and forth.

HOWEVER, I use my FEL all the time and going back and forth with a PowerReverser tranny is pretty easy. What tranny does the 5210 use? A SynchShuttle would be ok. PowerReverser is better. Collar shift is icky.

In the future are you going to be using any PTO hungry implements. Seems like the 5210 has some pretty good PTO HP. The 4700 is not bad but the HST drops the HP a bit. If you are only doing rotary cutting either will work unless you are going to be pulling some big cutters.

Well, now that is a highly informed, technical response. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

However, very effective! /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

I have a 5105 demo with under 40 hours on it. Has telescoping draft links, and folding ROPS, and is MFWD. Also has 521 loader. Deere doesn't currently offer a 4-in-1 bucket for this loader. I sell LandPride box scrapers, and a 78" 35 series would be comparable to a Gannon box scraper.

Price with top/tilt kit, tractor, loader, manual tooth scraper, is $25051.00 Would have to order in the Box scraper and top/tilt kit. Tractor and loader will have full warranty, and qualify for John Deere financing.

If you want to throw another option in the works, you might want to consider the 5105 - 5205 series. These tractors give you the larger HP and greater weight of the 5000 series, but at a lower cost than the 5X10 series. I think that John Miller III is the person to ask about the differences (he seems to know everything about just about anything/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif). As I recall, the 5X05 series have lower capacity hydraulics, and fewer transmission options, but still seem like very capable tractors.

Ron,

Hey... you talking 'bout me... /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif... My kids think their Papa knows just about everything... but Shhaaaa... don't say a word... /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Actually I think you've got him throughly confused now... but the first question is How much do you want to spend? and what equipment do you expect to buy for that amount of money?

Lastly, what is the main purpose of buying the tractor? What are you mostly going to do with it?...

Then we can look in the magic crystal ball and voi'la... come up with some answers... /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

JM III You hit the nail on the head with that one. The real questions should be what do you need to do with the tractor. If you want to finish mow your yard, I think that the 5000 series are likely too big for this. If however you plan to bale hay, I think that the 4000 series are likely too small(the 5000 series might be too small for this too). If you need a good all around tractor, the larger 4000 series (the 4600, 4700) tractors seem to be able to do most anything. If you don't think so, just ask CowboyDoc, he swears by his 4600. I think that if do not have an immediate need for the tractor, it is wise to really take your time, and get to know the big dealers in your area (Orange, Blue, and Green), and to carefully weigh all of your options. As you will hear as nauseum on this forum, the dealer makes all the difference.
