I have recently purchased a Cub Cadet 5234d tractor. It has a front loader and belly mower and has 4 wheel drive. My problem is that it has no power. In only moderate grass the engine bogs down ridiculously and when trying to scoop a pile of loose dirt it did the same. In reading about this tractor I haven't run across anyone else who had power problems with these tractors. I have a John Deere 455 with the same horsepower as the Cadet that would never bog down when mowing. Someone suggested to me that the emission limiter could be the problem but no one knows anything about getting rid of it. Any ideas?

have you changed the fuel filter?

I haven't yet i was hoping the filter was clear but of course that would make too much sense so its something else to try but you're not supposed to have to change it until 300 hours. My tractor just recently turned 48 hours which is why i was unsure that it was the problem.

But you dont know if dirty fuel was ran through it. Any time we have a lack of power on a diesel its more and likely a filter hope this is your problem!

Does it smoke when it bogs down? If so what color is the smoke?

Black smoke is usually a signal that there's too much fuel, not enough air or injector pump timing is off. One of the most common causes of this condition is an air inlet restriction. The cause may be a dirty air filter, a collapsed intake hose or even an exhaust restriction.

White smoke usually occurs when there is not enough heat to burn the fuel. The unburned fuel particles go out the tailpipe and typically produce a rich fuel smell. It's not unusual to see white smoke in the exhaust during cold weather until the engine warms up. Bad glow plugs or a faulty glow plug control module can cause white smoke on engine start up. Low engine cranking speed may also produce white smoke.
If white smoke is still visible after the engine has warmed up, the engine may have one or more bad injectors, retarded injection timing or a worn injection pump. Low compression can also be a source of white smoke. Air in the fuel system can also cause white smoke.

Are you running correct RPMs for 540 PTO or midmount PTO? Get the RPMs up to recommended rate.

RPM's might be the problem maybe the governor is sticking, needs adjustment or is missing a spring. Any of these would items would not let it bring up the RPM's when needed.
