Hello guys. I just got my new cub cadet the other day, a used 2004 5252 with only 21 hours on it and with a 60 mm deck. I paid $6000.00 for it and seems to be a great deal. This is the first cub I have owned and I am very pleased with it so far and am looking forward to all the work I can do. Is there any known problems with this tractor? Right now the only thing I notice is that the eng [25 hp kohler] seems to have a slightly rough idle but runs smooth at full throttle and the whine in the trans [normal?] These things my be normal but do not know for sure. Any thoughts

I have a 2005 5252 I picked up a couple months ago. I love it so far. The only problem I've had is a slow leak in a hydraulic line that runs from the transmission to the hydraulic oil filter. It appears a lubrication zerk on the mower deck drive shaft probably damaged the line while the PTO was engaged. There doesn't seem to be much clearance between the mower deck drive shaft and this hydraulic line. Hopefully this won't be a recurrent problem.

The only other problem I have had seems to echo may other comments I've seen regarding the 5000 series tractors. The replacement part has been backordered for 3 weeks and still not arrived at the dealer. I've heard several people say that it is difficult to find dealers who stock parts for the 5000 series tractors - there just aren't that many of the tractors in the market.

As for the transmission whine, I believe this is normal. I had a 2550 prior to this tractor and it whined as well.

My Kohler engine seems to run as smooth as I would expect. I haven't noticed anything here that would give me pause.

Welcome. I have the 5254 and also have a "whine" in the tranny. Called Cub, they said it was normal.

I had a problem with the hydro hoses under my tractor also. There is a service bulletin on the 5000 series. Some of the hoses were put on backwards. The tranny end of the hose should have a 90 degree fitting on it, not a 45. Cub will pay for the fix and any damage.

FROM WHAT I KNOW THE FIRST OWNER ALREADY HAD THE HOSE UNDER THE TRACTOR REPAIRED, AS HE SAID IT HAD A LEAK IN THAT AREA. I ALSO NOTICED THAT THE WHINE IS MOST LIKLY FROM THE 3PH HYD AS I CHANGES PITCH AS I USE IT. SO FAR I AM VERY PLEASED WITH THE TRACTOR AND IT SURE DOES A GREAT JOB ON MY LAWN , CUTTING THE TIME IN HALF FROM MY OLD SEARS W/44 INCH DECK. I HAVE A LARGE CASE 430 WITH A LOADER AND SMALL BACKHOE AND TWO FORD N TRACTORS SO ALL MY BIG WORK IS TAKING CARE OF, BUT IT SURE IS NICE TO HAVE THE CUB AROUND FOR THE SMALL STUFF. That's definitely good to know about the service bulletin. I'll check the fittings tonight. Something definitely had to be wrong, it started leaking after the first time I had it out.

You have the same make/year that I do and I bought mine new. Here's a few things to check. The 60" deck for that year needs a mod kit that is available from Cub. The kit fixes the problem of the deck having belts jump off pulleys and breaking. The transaxle whine is apparently normal but very annoying. Grease zerks are constantly falling off so buy a bunch to keep on hand. The rough idle may be caused by the crankcase vent tube flowing back into the carb mouth. I discovered that mine was actually dripping a small amount of condensation (winter time) back into the carb causing a rough idle. I simply moved the tube so it could drain outside the carb and no problem since. Check the tightness of any nuts bolts and screws as they all seem to want to loosen. Other than these few things I have found the tractor to be very strong and dependable. I have a FEL and I excavated a 16X32 hole for my inground pool with it. Took two weekends and a lot of loads. There were cars stopping on the road to watch the little cub move tons of dirt.

Thank for the good info on the 5252. My mmm cuts well but I will check on the up-dated pulley for the deck. Also this weekend I will look over the complete machine for any thing that needs attention like loose bolts and the grease zerks. As for the whine I guess I am used to it by now and I doesn't bother me at all. I often think about the many attachments that this little workhorse can use and pour over the web sites looking at them. As for now, I have a large Case farm tractor with a loader and 3 PT John Deere back-hoe hung on a home made subframe that I do all my large jobs with. Also there is a 1948 Ford 8N in the shed that still pulls like a mule--- but I love my little Cub! This site is such a pleasure to have and thanks to all that keep it going. Joelaudi
