I have done a lot of bush hog mowing with this tractor and have hit a lot of rock buried whatevers and you name it. Even though the hog has a slip clutch, over the years it knocked out a bearing on the primary shaft coming off the clutch.
The cage that holds the ball bearings failed and let the balls go to one side freeing up the primary shaft. There was a growl and I thought maybe the mower failed. After getting into it found it was the tractor. I pulled the back plate off and there it was. A lot of teeth were chewed of the primary and the secondary that is on the pto shaft was slightly buggered up. I replaced them all. Primary, bearing and seconday gear. Over a grand for the three pieces and gasket.
Would have liked to see a caged roller bearing instead of ball bearings. Too many hits on the area between the balls forces the cage to spread and fail.
That is my assessment of the issue. Is back together and working fine.
If you have put on a lot of mowing hours and been hitting a lot of this and that, you may want to check yours out before it gives up.
