Was looking at a 5303 today with the complaint of very hard starting in cold temps. I was looking for a place to install a block heater but didn't see anything that appeared to be a likely spot for one. Parts book shows a listing for one as an option, but the drawing next to the part number doesn't look like anything I see an opening for.

Also considering the idea of adapting a grid heater package similar to what's offered on the 5310, 5410, and some others. Looks like that's a possibility, and might be accomplished for $200 to $300 or so.

Wondering if anyone might have some experience either way.

I have installed the block heater in both of my 5403s and 5203. All are identical to your 5303. The block heater installs in the left rear of the block. It's a very tight fit, but will go in without removing too much stuff. The plug that comes out requires a large allen wrench. The instructions that come with the heater will show the correct location.

I saw no such plug on either side. Is this on the back of the block and accessed from the rear of the engine after removing side panels and other obstructions?

This is what you are looking for. The picture is from my 2008 model 2520, but I think the style crosses many models ... Good luck.

I should add that the square in the plug is filled by the 1/2” drive of a ratchet or in most cases a long handled breaker bar!

Plug is on back side or rear of engine block, and none of mine were square internal, all were hex internal.

Thanks to you both. That gives me something to look for.

By the way, where the heck is Thurlow? Google map puts it as a spot on Hwy 68 somewhere south of Greensburg. Does that sound right?

That is correct, southwest Green Co.
